Hi all

The front brake disc on my 97 Honda VTR250 is apparently warped - the pads are fine and no leaks, but I get shuddering/catching upon braking which makes it very difficult to stop with any finesse (no real trouble stopping in a hurry though)

The good gents at Cyclespot informed me that there is no aftermarket front brake disc for pre-2002 VTR 250s and now I'm looking at ~$700 for a new one. Does anyone have any experience with aftermarket brakes or buying such things from wreckers? (or have a good one they would like to sell me?)

Cheers

Ah excellent, I see they do straightening also. Will have to drop them a line. Thanks for that :)

Pads are common, so maybe discs are too?

I would check with a wrecker, to see if any other Honda disks are the same size. Honda has a habit of making them the same size but with slightly different drillings, carrier colours, or whatever.
F'rinstance, my VFR has mismatched front disks: one has a silver carrier, the other gold, and the hole patterns on the disks are different.
F'rinstance, my VF500's front disks were worn beyond the limits. The dealer said "No no no - you can't get disks for them any more!"
The first wrecker said, "Nup."
The second said. "Hmmmmm.... Hmmmmmmm... I think I know what'll fit!"
And it did: NSR250 or NS250 (can't recall now) were the same diameter and bolt holes.

Even if the wreckers don't have anything suitable, they may be able to help withgiving you some more models that are the same size, so you can buy something suitable.

According to metalgear's website (http://metalgear.com.au/part_disc.asp?partno=21.002) its the same as the cb250f hornet, but no others

That link only lists 1998+ VTRs, mine is 1997, so there might be others.

Thanks, none that mention VTR250s at the moment, but I'm digging around.

is it a matter of just matching outer/inner diameters and rivet holes?

Inner/outer diameter of the rotor (shiny) part, the size and spacing of the hub bolt holes, diameter of the hub hole, thickness of the rotor, whether the carrier is flat or concave...

VT250, different to the VTR250. However, as a wrecker he may have one for a hornet 250 or a vtr... Bikebusters may have one too as they've wrecked a few VTR's lately, here is one of their trademe listings: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Parts-for-sale/Complete-engines/auction-216726002.htm Although always better to call them!

Yeah, totally different I'm afraid.

Well the auction title says VTR250.

Sucks the metalgear site doesn't have the info for the 97 VTR, cause you don't know your options. I'd be thinking it's probably the same disc as the 98- whatever model though, as that's the newer model VTR250, as opposed to the interceptor right? Which was way back 1990.

It's slightly confusing tbh, the guy at cyclespot said they only have aftermarket brake discs for 2002+ models, but there on the metalgear site it states that that one is good for 1998-2007...
