I have been having some problems with cold starting of my Yamaha XS1100 over the past few weeks.
After fixing an electrical fault, replacing the battery, removing and cleaning the tank, removed dismantled and cleaned the pet cocks
checked the ignition timing, cleaned the air filter,
checked all main power cables,
clean and checked the plugs.
The coils and leads are only 12 mths old.
The bike still will not start when cold, on a cold day.
Using the choke makes no difference, to the point that using the choke seems to make it worse.
Yet on a warm afternoon, the bike will fire up perfectly, and run as it should.
I was thinking that the starter mtr was on its death bed,
as it has trouble turning the bike over when cold, with the sound of a flat battery, yet battery is fully charged and new.
Upon reading in another thread of a similar problem which was in the end caused by dirt and water in the carbs.
So this makes me think I have the same problem.
I think that I need to dismantle and clean the carbs, which I have no problem in doing.
I guess what I am asking, is there anything else that could be causeing this which I should look at before attacking the carbs.
