Lazy day on the tarmac????
- round the Welly bays, Miramar, Welly South coast, up over Brooklyn, out to Karori(gun emplacment), Makara Beach, back road to Johnsonville, Paekak Hill, Waikane, over Akatarawa Rd to Upper Hutt; split off for Wairarapa or Welly homes.
Plenty of options for latte stops on that!!!

Sounds good Joe, Not a lot of gravel that links up with anywhere left in the Wellington area though. Although you could head out to red rocks on the south coast from Owhiro Bay as you can on Saturdays. Unfortunatly I'm tied up Saturday Mornings at the sports fields. But might be able to catch up with you during the Afternoon.

If you wanted to start in Upper hutt you could add in Whitemans valley, from either Te-Marua, or Mungaroa Hill, and out the Blue mountains road, The short straw cafe up a side road is a fairly good Cafe. You could then go over the Moon shine road, and head to Judgeford, Pauatahanui, and on to Johnsonville, and Makara etc. Just a few thoughts for other roads, unfortunatly all sealed these days.

Is all good Joe, I might catch you up during the Afternoon. The Wrights Hill ones well be all sealed up, Still worth a look though. They are run by a preservation society and are open on Public holidays for a fee. A part of one of my previous jobs was keeping them locked up after people had Gascut their way in. I think I've seen pictures of the ones you mean , and they are out towards Makara somewhere, but think access is only by foot across private land, but don't quote me on that. Heres a site about them http://www.whfrs.org.nz/

Now to prove my Ignorance of wellington, where is Fort Ballance?

Yep after the war, three rounds were fired from each Gun, with reports of broken windows. Have a read of the history page on that site.
heres a link to Fort Ballance, it's on Miramar Peninsula, at Point Gordon. http://capitaldefence.orconhosting.net.nz/prfles/pre1930/ballnce1.htm
