Hey I was just curious as to how many women ride motorbikes because I haven't seen very many to this date. My mum rides motorbikes, infact she rides my R6 every now and then. But I have only met a couple other female riders. Howcome? The few female riders I have met were very good riders, but I only ever meet/see male riders.
This is a serious question because I have no idea why not many women like to ride! Most of the girls my age that I have met don't seem to think riding is all that cool.

Well, you've probably met Number One, Str8jacket, Skunk Control, Nasty and I and possibly a few others at buckets, we're all female and ride bikes (and I don't mean just buckets) so there's five there. You probably see female riders everyday, we just don't all go about on our pink bikes with our matching pink jacket and helmet.

When I stop at the top of the Rimutakas (quite often up there) only on the rare occasion do I see ladies up there. I have seen a lady on her SV650 and one on her Ducati but other than them all it usually is are dudes. I don't have a problem with it as such, but it would be nice to chat to ladies every now and then up there or something!

Yup and you are the ladies I meant! And I totally aggree with the pink bike thing, don't worry that isn't what I meant! I just don't seem to see female riders up the top of the rimutakas or at a red light or something on the way into town. At University I have only seen two girls who ride bikes, one of them rides a Ninja250 and the other rides a cruiser 250 thing. That is out of HEEAAAAPPPPSS of riders.

Forget the biker chicks. You'll be far better off getting yourself a normal woman who doesn't actually have a problem with motorcycling, and taking it from there.

Women who are already into bikes are either mannish and odd, or the leavings of some other biker dude who's trained them up and moved on.

Then again, if the idea of either of the above excites you, you're in the right place.

Ahem...It is not just the Southern lasses that are spirited you know ;) I have been riding for over 30 years now, and know many females that ride bikes. We are not that rare a breed it seems. As far as categorising women goes, while I may own the odd thing from time to time, I am a bit of a girly girl and apart from work based qualifications the last time anyone gave me any training was when my mother took me out of diapers as a baby.

To the OP - there are plenty of biker chicks out there, you're just looking in the wrong places. We come in all shapes, sizes, colours, persuasions, orientations, ages, occupations....just like boy bikers really ;) Some bikers are odd and mannish, whilst some are fat, hairy neanderthal types. Best you keep your eyes open so you don't run into one of the latter - I hear they're a bit smelly.

I went on quite a few of the kiwibiker rides from Avalon Park (mostly Wednesday. Thursday I have work at night) and didn't bump into many female riders. Also I clock up the kms big time going all sorts of places other than just Rimutakas. Over Paekak, Palmerston, Waipukurau, Taupo, Napier to name a few. Track days I haven't seen many female riders as well. I remember seeing rachprice at the motomart trackday in February, and one or two others.

When I headed over to paraparam from Upper Hutt today I was looking out very closely at the riders! I saw heeeaps of guys (mostly Harley/cruiser bikes actually... one gixxer thou!!) and two women. One of those women was pillion and the other was riding a scorpio 225 looking thing - her lean angle round one of the bends on Grays road looked wicked!! Scraping peg action!!

I can't speak for any other of the chicks who ride out there but when I go out for a ride that is what I'm doing, riding, not stopping for a chat and a coffee, I can do that any time.
Maybe my smartarse husband's right, maybe many of us are busy working or cleaning the house to be out all day riding and pissing about like the blokes seem to manage to do.
And to be honest I don't really think I look like a chick when I'm on my bike, I wear a mean helmet, black leather pants, a silver leather jacket (possibly the only gear I wear that isn't strictly "manly") and ride a black 900, the only thing that gives me away (I think) is that occasionally my hair pops out of my jacket and flys out behind me, but otherwise I'm sure I'd look like any other motorcyclist. And if I don't stop and take my helmet off, how would you know?

Yeah I don't stop for ages either, but I do enjoy stopping at least once when I am with a group of people for a bit of a chat and to laugh at how far each of us managed to wheelie or something. But even when I stop I don't see female riders very often no matter where it is! And with a helmet and leathers on I am sure it is hard to tell, but still it seems to me there aren't many. The few female riders I have met have been very good riders so I am suprised the number of women I have met/seen that ride bikes is low.

Haha ok. But I wasn't really trying to meet a girl that rides bikes if you know what I mean. I was just really curious! Most of my mates get pissed off when I talk about bikes (except for the ones that ride as well) so I figured that riding bikes wasn't just a guy thing or anything like that. Just totally curious as to why I hardly meet any other female riders! I was at a party recently where the only two people there that knew anything about motorbikes were two very nice girls who talked to me about Repsol Honda and the 'hunk' Nicky Hayden (not doing so well this season!!) and the race in Qatar etc. etc. They didn't ride road bikes though.

Myself and my husband went for a tour up North Island a few months back, i was surprised at the amount of women who would walk up and say its so good to see a woman riding a motorbike! i was a little taken back really as down south Island i know alot of woman who ride bikes alot of young women as well. I didn't think much about it but thought there would be alot of women riding in the North Island because of the bigger population. I just think its the perceived risk, and it is more risky than what most women would do for a past time/interest/sport. Forget the biker chicks. You'll be far better off getting yourself a normal woman who doesn't actually have a problem with motorcycling, and taking it from there.

Women who are already into bikes are either mannish and odd, or the leavings of some other biker dude who's trained them up and moved on.

Then again, if the idea of either of the above excites you, you're in the right place.

oh dear -
you are obviously either doing the troll thingy or having a REALLY bad day ......

methinks you were happier when more in touch with your feminine side - time to resurrect 'fish' mebbe? ... or get back into the lycra?

There are loads of females riding around the country. Every month I have a give-away with my column and I've had hundreds of entries to date. I find majority are riding 400cc-600cc but there are a selected few that have returned to riding and are on 1000cc bikes.

There are loads of females riding around the country....

Indeed there are ... most don't make an issue of the fact that they ride a bike. If you didn't know them personally ... you would never know.
Often ... untill/up to, the time the helmet comes off.... the gender remains unknown. And ... long may it continue.
Often the guy that blew you into the weeds in those last twisties...wasn't a guy. When you follow him into the gas station to complement him, on his ability... and she giggles ....

The latest stats from the LTA show:

- Females make up 11% of the current 110,000 registered motorcycles in New Zealand

- 26% within the 11% of females ride motorcycles over 751cc

- Females make up 17% of serious motorcycle crashes

If you want to see more about motorcycling from the female perspective check out the ladies column Heels On Wheels every month in the Motorcycle Trader magazine or email your thoughts and feedback to heelsonwheels@motorcycletrader.co.nz :)

- Females make up 17% of serious motorcycle crashes

Would this include those who are pillion and are involved in a crash, because in pretty sure the majority of pillions are female and may not have thier licence but could be added to the 11%

Track days I haven't seen many female riders as well. I remember seeing rachprice at the motomart trackday in February, and one or two others.

You need to come to a CD"s track day, there are more female riders attending every year. Our last one was buzzing with chicks who ride, you would be surprised who attends the day and are fellow KBer's, which is very cool :woohoo:

And Sarge is right there are heaps of chicks up here in the Manawatu that ride
