Changing learner bike engine size

Hi all,

I was speaking to a mate of mine today and he was saying that he'd heard they were changing the engine size for learners soon (making it bigger). Has anyone else heard of this rumour at all?

But yes its a proposal to increase it to 650cc limit, with a 150kilowatt per ton cut off.

the other thread that is on here about this has got info on that. Someone wrote away to find info on the matter. If I remember correctly they said that it wouldnt even be discussed untill at least late next year. so assuming that is correct, you can probably say its at least 2 years before it happens (IF it happens) maybe three years.

interestingly, as it is, say you are pulled over on the motorway tomorrow, on a 600cc bike, doing 100km/hr at 11pm
if you have your 6L its
no learner plate (I think) $400
breaching the Learner 70km limit maybe $150
breaching engine size $400
beaching your hours, what $150 - $400? not sure how much.
On the other hand, say you have NO bike licence at all
drove a vehicle you werent licensed for $400. is all youd get.

I think any breach of licence condition is $400. And that is for each breach.
I'm not sure if that also covers things like 'must wear corrective lenses'. Anyone else?

the tickets is failing to display l plate and out of hours and perhaps speeding , thats all on a learners licence.
how many ppl do you know who have had a exceeding 70kph ticket??

Any ticket you get on your 6L will also come with demerits, I think its 25 per breach of conditions, as well as $400 per breach so in the situation I posted, thats $1200 plus 75 demerits

With no licence its only a fine and demerits for "did operate a vehicle without the correct licence". Dont know where you get the $1000 fine from!?!?!?
Between myself and several friends who ride harleys back up home, I know of at least a dozen situations where people have been pulled over like that with no licence, never heard of a $1000 fine going with it. I have done it a HEAP of times, I just always wrote away telling lies about how I was doing mechanical work on the bike and was pulled over while riding the bike to check that I had done the repairs correctly, like brake pad changes etc etc, and always got off the $400 fine for not being licenced anyway.

As for getting done for the 70km restriction, Im sure that if a cop pulled you over randomly, and realised all of the other licence breaches, he would fugure fuck it, I will go him for the whole lot, which I can understand, you make the decision to brake the law you gotta be prepared to accept the consequences I guess!!!

Point of it is, I find it funny that, if you insist on riding a big bike straight away, you are better off not bothering with a licence at all.

Actually, come to think of it, in the situation I posted, on your 6L, on a 600cc bike, at 11pm, doing 100km/hr it would be
Breaching learner speed limit $400 plus 25 demerits
Breaching hours of licence conditions $400 plus 25 demerits
Breaching cc restriction $400 plus 25 demerits
failed do display L plate $400 plus 25 demerits.

Thats 100 demerits. which means instant loss of licence. 100 demerits in 2 years say good bye to your licence for three months!!!! So you wont be driving a car either, you lose ALL driving priviledges, period.

as opposed to a measly 25 demerits and $400 fine. The system needs to change.

In Victoria they have something called LAMS (Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme). The road regulator releases a list of bikes that are legally approved to be ridden by learners. The list is based on power to weight rather than outright capacity, so you can't do anything to the bike which changes the factory power to weight ratio.

The list is surprisingly broad and fairly sensible. It is a mix of modern bikes and classics. You can have a look at the list here:
