View Full Version : Best Rubber?

I know this question is asked alot, But what do people recommend for the best sticky rubber out there? I had a set of Perelli Diablo's on my GSXR and they worked bloody well. I now have an R6 and its almost time for some new rubber! The Pilot sports on it at the moment seem to do the job OK also. Not quite as good as the Diablo's tho.
So before i go out and get another set of Diablo's i thought i would get everyone elses opionion?
Also anyone know where to get them at a good price?? Or just your good old Cycle treads on barrys point road good as any?
Cheers,
Arven.

Hey man. I've been using Pirelli Diabs without any majors but have heard great stories about Pilot powers  . These will more than likely be the next set I put on. I reckon cycletreads will cut you a good deal. good luck :niceone:

tried D207s, Pirellis Diablo Corsas and Supercorsas on my GSXR. Don't bother with any 207's, Diablo corsas were really good for me (nearly squashed my leg between fairing and road one day and they still didn't let go so that'll do me!) so I wouldn't hesitate to try them again for quick road riding or track days.
Using supercorsas at the moment because there's quite a lively stock of 2nd hand ones available from the F2 series. They have been raced of course, but at $180 for a pair (fitting extra) with most of the wear at the edges, they're a pretty good deal. I'm running 6psi higher than normal to make them last longer on the road (SC1 grade) and while they're not locking the rear and front down like they normally would, they're certainly good enough for a road hard thrash without disintegrating (although maybe not in peak summer). So value for money, I'd give second hand race tyres a go! (just make sure they're not overly blue and have had the life cooked out of them!)
But if you have lotsa cash for new tyres, it sounds like Sportecs or Roadtecs are worth a go (Motoracer put up a thread on this a few weeks ago and had some good responses)

If it helps, my back one is shot, so I did some calling around.
I've been told by a few people to try to avoid mixin n matchin with front and rear tyres, that you should try to keep the same make, and the same model if poss at both ends.
In light of this, I called around for a rear Battlaxe cos that's what's standard on mine. I've found the exact same tyre on special, along with a few other tyres on special at Rowes, on Rosebank Road in Avondale. They're getting rid of stock 'so they don't have to count it' kind of thing. My Battlaxe 012 is about $50 cheaper than everywhere else I've called, and they have access to quite a few. They had about 6 different rears on the shelf right there, and they seem to get in anything else you want too.
As for my Battlaxes, I've not had too many tyres to compare it to, but I've had a bit of a go at giving it shit, and it takes it. They've even surprised me with it's grip several times, that's why I'm so stoked that I'm getting another one on the back. Had my feet scraping the floor (would be my knee, but no sliders yet) and it still goes some. I'm more than happy with the feedback and confidence mine have given me, but like I said, I haven't had all the experiance in the world..
Have a read thru this too, might help a little. Was posted a while back about something like this, so I saved this pdf

I am still selling my ex-race tires. About 20% used from new and half the price from RRP @ NZD 275.
That's for a set of Metzeler Racetecs, K1 front and K2 rear. Best set of rubbers you can buy for your bike and no, it's not just a sales pitch. Ask anyone.

I'd put my two cents in on pilot powers, i went from sports to powers on the TL, and most know how hard TL's are on tyres and they were shit hot, spesh in wet conditions, loads of grip, heat up time is real quick, alot quicker than say a supercorsa/rennsport type of tyre. But i didn't get a chance to find what sorta mileage you could get outta them, had a wee moment. But i wouldn't blink at putting them on any bike of mine. Any bike that goes that is

Metzeler Sportec M1's. Best all round rubber out there and a steal at $399 per set from Welly motorcycles.

Yeh,I like M1's too,nice and predictable....
I don't think you can go wrong with any of the late sport tyres,I've tried avons,208's,rs1's and 2's,M1's,diablo's etc.
The only one I didn't really like were the diablo's,not enough grip and felt funny, but lasted well.

If you like your Diablos you may not be quite as happy with the Pilot powers. I have gone from Diablo Corsa to Pilot Power.
The good part is the life , up to 4000kms now and probably another 1000km left where a Diablo Corsa would be all over at 3000kms.
The Bad part as far as I am concerned is that they dont have the absolute glued to the road feeling you get from the Pirelli and I have had the odd little unexpected moment that just hurts the confidence a little. I will have a Pirelli back on before the KB track day at Taupo :2thumbsup

I guess a lot depends on what you're looking for. I'm one of those miserable sods that doesn't understand why road riders buy stickies for road use. Track - yeah fine, that's what they were designed for. Otherwise they seem like a waste of money to me. Ok, they offer great grip in the dry (and winters coming ...), particularly once warmed up, but in terms of value for money I think they're a waste. In general, they don't last very long and offer inferior grip in damp/wet conditions compared to dual compound tyres designed for fast road use.
My BT020's are the dogs danglies as far as I'm concerned. Quite hard in the centre, but surprisingly sticky on the outside making them perfik for fast cornering. Although the BiffBird is a big un, other Bird users report over 6000 miles (8000 K?) out of them when treated with care and over 5000 miles when abused. I'm also a big fan of Pilots.

I have just got back to Welly from Kehikehi and am running Diablo corsa's on a SV1KS, western access was the real test  taco didn't drop under 5K and the wife on the back didn't even hit me once when the pegs were scraping on the ground :mega: :argh: In the desert road @ the three sisters (where it's always wet) the Diablo corsa's were amazing! :first: :first: didn't even know that the road condition had changed (wet to dry and back again). The long and short of it, I recommend Diablo corsa's to anyone they are just the best and I know, I have ridden on all kind of tyres.

different tyres ranging from shite when poor to best when not. Allways come back to Bridgestone (I thaink they sat battleaxe, or sommin like that). Never broken loose, even in the rain. Tried em on the white paint on the roads, still no probs. Might be different on a heavier bike, I dunno.

Well thats dam interesting as i was thinking of changing from diablos to the pilot.I had a diablo corsa which i loved and trusted. Then i was sent the wrong tyre and now have a straight diablo which sucks shit i recon.Had the aprilia almost fully crossed up in a corner in the weekend to which i thought where did that come from un til it tried me on another 2 kms up the road.Proves to me theres a hugh differance between the diablo and the diablo corsa.Think ill go back to the corsa.

I'll debate that. My bleeding SC1 supercorsa's nearly spat me off going over damp white paint at 15kmhrs on a tight corner. if you can't get your tires to let go on white paint, you're not trying hard enough!

i put some super corsas on the other week and yeah... i can see what you mean. had a close call out side the bike shop (that would have been a shout!)
but i am still hooked on em, took them for a good ride over the Kaimais the other week and it was pulling 10-20kmh more up there than my old mich pilot sports.

I have had a Diablo Corsa on the front and a standard Diablo on the rear for the last 11000kms, they are due for replacement now.
In this time I have done 3 track days, No Im not the fastest guy around but held my own nicely thank you in the fast class at Manfield so Im not hugley slow either.
The front Corsa Diablo has never let go on the road and very slightly slipped at Manfield but that was an operator issue.
The rear Diablo has done exceptionally well, Manfield was a bit much for it as it slipped on a few occasions, I was seriously pushing a standard tyre however so it should be no surprise.
For the future, Im a believer in "'ïf it aint broke dont fix it"
The Diablos are a good safe bet for the track and the road at my level, I will be putting a Corsa on the rear this time though.
Just wish they werent so damn expensive!!!!!!!

Got corsa front and diablo back (Soft front hard rear) and if you are looking for a good price phone colemans they were about a 100 bucks cheaper than any one else. I have tried about 4 different types of brands Bridgestone Dunlop (crap) Mitchellin and Pirelli trough the years
Bridgestone batelaxe execelent
Dunlop's (Just a bad experience although there is people out there that believe in them)
Mitchellin Good tyre
Pirelli If you have the money this is your tyre

I note nobody's mentioned the dunlop 208's... does nobody else use them or am I really missing out on something?
My r6 came with them and I was a bit dubious at first (bad past dunlop experiences), and planned to replace them with pirellis at first opportunity but they've earned a spot in my heart. I cant fault them - great feel and stickability - maybe a little tetchy in the wet but who isnt? :msn-wink: - at least they give warning as you approach their limits unlike older models.
I've got one of the new 218s on at the moment and put it round puke on saturday and *shrug* it fit the bill sweet as... I do note the 208rr is this season's control tyre in the aussie superbikes so they must be somewhat ok...
