Does any know of an insurance company that includes dirt bikes on home contents insurance or is this an urban myth and everyone has a seperate policy, ?

we just renewed our contents policy, with state, for the last few years they have told us that its fine to have 2 jetskis listed on the contents policy and they would be covered - they were also listed items, then the person we dealt with the other day at state told us that was all wrong and that they could not be covered like that and therefore the 'cover' we thought we had was invalid.

this pisses me off because it seems that people at the insurance co can tell you something is insured but really it isnt... which would mean that unless you specificly have a seperate policy on each individual item they could weazel their way out of most claims.

on that note my bikes are on a seperate policy

Contents is an interesting area. Get it in writing before you hand over any money... AMI in particular is a franchise and the staff/manager can make different decisions at different branches or even the same one! So shop around if you are in a big city with multiple branches. Find a bike-friendly staff member and try to always deal with them.

Document items (eg dirt bike/jetski) with photos. We lost out in a burglarly claim due to not having enough evidence of a piece of heirloom jewelry, so they paid almost nothing.

I'm with John Baker Insurance under their 'fleet' cover. It's cheaper to have my unregistered dirt bike lumped in with the 'road' bike for full comprehensive cover of the fleet, than to have two separate policies with the dirt bike only fire & theft. They may also be sufficiently cheap to insure your dirt bike separate from your contents.

I'm with State and their subsidiary company which handles sundries like bikes (can't remember the name of them offhand) covers my bike for $68 pa. This includes theft at home and accident damage during transit. But not theft off the trailer.

I have mine insured with AMI and they don't cover them under contents insurance, they are insured seperately. Costs bugger all though.

We're with FMG. All the bikes are covered while locked away at home and while in transit. Bikes under $2k do not need to be itemised and are covered under contents. Luckily haven't had to test whether they would actually pay out should some scum bag nick them!..

Our kids quads are listed on our contents policy. Other bikes have their own policies. We're with AMI. one costs $60 a year & the other $70. Thats for fire & theft at home & damage while in transit.

I'd be interested to know which policies include bikes. AMI in Takapuna said a quad or CRF50 was OK so long as it wasn't used for racing. CRF150 not allowed, and their bike policies so uncompetetive that they obviously don't want to be bothered with anyone with more sense than money (for bikes anyway, the rest was OK).

Have tried to find out which policy a bike is covered on when on a trailer and it seems to depend on whether you're asking about buying bike insurance or car insurance - ie: they try to sell you another policy. Methinks insurance companies aren't in the game for philanthropic reasons...

This seems wrong as we are insured with AMI in Takapuna, as the missus said above both quads are on contents and our 2 dirt bikes are insured for theft, fire etc and damage/theft when in transit. The dirt bikes are on a special policy just for them. The cost is $60 for 1 and $70 for the other.

My road bike is a few hundred and is on a road bike policy, much the same as a car.

We have all our insurance with AMI Takapuna - had cars, roadbike, contents & house with them prior to getting our dirtbikes. The quads are on contents because they're only 50cc. Our dirtbikes are on a Motorcycle Policy with Restricted Cover. AMI only have one sort of bike policy which is the basis then they put restrictions onto it.
It does depend who you talk to at any company though - some know different areas better.
When insuring the 1st quad we were firstly told it got its own policy - then we they asked for a drivers license number which obviously our kids don't have or need to ride it they took it to the manager who said it goes onto contents.
Jst thawt we also brought a JR50 which i think is on the contents - must phone & check i did infact add it on

Basicly most H and C policies will replace any bike that is 50cc or smaller.
After my er recent "loss" My yard policy now specifically covers trail bikes for theft whilst in the yard and whilst being transported
BUT I must keep an up to fdate list of chasis numbers
Mind you my insurance costs me $5000 a year

We were with AMI they covered any bike less than 100cc on the house contents policy. cost nothing extra just needed to be added on so they knew. Only found out when we got them knicked though. So they only gave us money for the 100 ( after proving to them its actually less than 100cc i.e 99.7!) 85 and 70. Funny how they cover a 2 smoker 85 at twice the expense of the 100 4 stroke.

I have now got my insured with star insurance. 5 bikes 250, 200, 2no.85s and a 100 for fire and theft for $785.00 thought that was reasonable. It includes theft while on trailer or anywhere else for that matter.

Peace of mind.. going with an insurance company that knows motorbikes as opposed to one that doesn't.
Just ends in tears at the end of the day when they don't pay out through a loop hole.

Better to spend the extra with people that talk the same language as us, as opposed to somebody just wanting to take your coin.
