Bad news couple of mates saw it on the way to greymouth from the coast rd, bloody odd place for that to happen... unfortunatly you dont have much of a chance tangling with a truck...

for a few years now new trucks have had to meet frontal impact laws, these include the deflecting of cars off the front of the truck (so they dont go underneath) means nothing on a bike tho. condolences to the family.

The guy who was killed was an english tourist and if the radio report was correct the rider crossed the centreline before he hit the truck and if thats the case I have far more sympathy for the driver of the truck being involved in an accident that he wasn't responsible for than I ever will for the rider who caused it.

Understand what you are sayin Kickaha...........
Is a pity........ the truckie will probably be facing a lot of moral pain and a lot of inconvenience too.......
Sad sad...... but if you cross the centerline then be prepared ........

Yup I'm with you Kickaha, always sad when a motorcyclist dies!!!
But that poor truck driver gets to live with that memory for the rest of his life.

I've was nearly hit by a coal truck on that section of road. He was quite out of order and drifted over as I overtook. Billowing, uncovered loads, at least one of those drivers is/was an asshole.

Coal trucks don't "billow". They're well doused with water to stop exactly that happening.
Oh, and that should be ARSEHOLE!

We had been talking with the some of the English group at Punakaiki while (unbeknown to us of course) this event was happening. We headed south to come across the accident site. Very sobering stuff.
