View Full Version : MMMMM 2009 24 - 26 July

The world famous Minginui-Matawai-Motu Midwinter Madness Ride is on 24-26 July.
The plan is to meet up at the Rangitaiki Pub on the Napier-Taupo road. There is food, beer, basic cabins & camping there for those who want to arrive Friday night. Phone them on 07 384 2803 to book yourself a bed.
More comfy accomodation, & extra bunks are also available 5km back down the road towards Taupo at the Rangitaiki Lodge. They have a couple of nice motel units, some tidy cabins & a bunkhouse. Call them on 07 384 2800 to book. As the Lodge bar usually closes at 8 the main gathering/meal/beers will be back at the pub.
8am Saturday we'll leave the Pub & head North along the Waipunga Rd across to highway 38 at Minginui then on through Waikaremoana, Wairoa, Tiniroto & a few backroads to my friend's farm, Journey's End Station, out the back of Matawai. We'll stay in the shearer's quarters which are quite modern & well appointed. BYO sleeping bag. If we are lucky Ann might even cook us dinner & get in some beer for us. Bring your sleeping bag, there are 20 beds/matresses there, any extras will have to bring a camp mat too.
EDIT 15/7: Ann has offered to cook us dinner on the Saturday night, those who have done the ride before will know that we are in for a treat, most likely spit roasted lamb &/or wild pork fresh off the station. The cost for the accomodation & meal will be $25, bring cash. Ann has also offered to get some beer in for us, any flavour you like as long as its Tui stubbies, please PM me your beer orders by Wednesday 22, & bring $15 per 1/2 doz cash to pay for it.
On the Sunday we'll head out to Matawai then off down the Motu Rd to Opotiki, then a couple more backroads & maybe some hot pools, then back to my place at Rotoiti.
Further details will be added to this post as we get more organised.
Remember this is a MIDWINTER ride. Based on previous MMMMM rides there is a 100% chance it will rain, a 50% chance of snow, a 75% chance it will be bloody cold & a 100% chance that all those mad enough to do the whole ride will have lots of fun. The route is all tar & gravel roads, nothing technical, some of the gravel is often fairly rough & muddy though.
Distances:
Taupo - Rangitaiki Pub - 35 km (no fuel)
Rangitaiki Pub - Te Whaiti - 75km (no fuel)
Te Whaiti - Waikaremoana 70km (thats 180km from Taupo - pack extra gas if you've got a small tank)
Waikaremoana - Wairoa 60km
Wairoa - Journey's End 160km
Journey's End Station - Matawai 30km
Matawai - Opotiki 75km

A good rider could do it on road tyres, there are no killer hills or anything, but given some of the roads get the odd muddy patch something at least slightly knobbly would be best. Maybe something like a Continental TKC80, Mitas EO-7 or Dunlop D605.

Hi All, the 1st post has been updated with some ph numbers so you can book Fri night accom if required. There is also now a calendar entry so get registered!
Any trailer trash attending are welcome to park the tow rig at my place at Gisborne Pt on Lake Rotoiti. There's heaps of room, send me a PM.
I'll be heading off mid afternoon Friday, if it's a nice day I'll probably go via Matahina, Galatea, Minginui & backtrack down the Sat mornings route via the Waipunga. If the weather is crap I'll just go via SH5. Anyone that wants to join in let me know.

Friday night / Sat morning the pub has meals. If we fill the place up I might enquire about a deal on a set dinner & brekky. My friends at the station will probably be able to do dinner for us on the Sat night, this has been a highlight of previous rides. I'll check on that this weekend. (If not we'll sort out stuff for everyone to bring for a communal nosh up, maybe a big spag bol or something)
Breakfast on Sun: BYO, there'll be tea/coffee/milk there, I'll just take a handful of oats & make some porridge. Another option is stopping in at the cafe in Matawai when we pass there.
The first fuel after Taupo is at Waikaremoana Motor Camp yes.
Which reminds me... anybody riding over with me via Minginui on the Friday will need a 230 km range to get Murupara - Rangitaiki Pub then on to Waikaremoana the next day.

Yup, bring it on! I'd rather frost than rain any day. There's not much tarseal to ride in the morning sections so ice shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Another car at the scene told us he passed them just before this corner (pic doesn't show) which had a couple inches of snow on it.
Going too fast, big skid marks all over the road & ended up down the bank.
He was just climbing out the top of the car when we happend upon it. Borrowed car to if i remember correctly.......
I also believe he told us he was just out for a drive and had come in the other direction ealier so knew the snow was there.......

You're right, it does come off Takaputahi Rd. More correctly known as the Otipi track, put in years ago to investigate a possible dam site it goes all the way over to a dead end at the Motu river. I've been in there in the 4wd. It would be a good blast for the adv bikes but maybe not in winter as the river crossing at the start can be deep & the track is pretty slippery when wet.
I think I'll organise an expedition up there over summer. It'd be a good camping trip actually as there is a nice tenting spot at the end of the track by the Motu river.

Where we're going mate, we don't need roads
The route we are taking is through the Waipunga road - this goes through Kaingaroa forest & is a public access easement to the Whirinaki Forest Park - no permits required. I'll be checking with DOC & Timberlands before the ride but the gate is usually only closed when there is a high fire risk.
There is no limit on numbers but if you are signing up now you will need to bring a camp mattress & a warm sleeping bag as you'll be sleeping on the woolshed floor. I will need definite numbers a week out so I can organise beer/dinner on the Saturday.

How long would it take to get from Napier to where we will turn off (Waipunga Rd?) from SH5 into the forest to go towards Minginui?
Crisis management
6th July 2009, 07:55
Not an exact answer Mark but I think it's about 130kms (1.5 hours) from Napier to Taupo and the turn off is about 30 kms from Taupo (back towards Napier) so for the KLR, about 2 hours from Napier? :dodge:

Thank you (sort of)
I presume the turnoff is Pohokura Rd? - say 1hr15 ish from Napier
I presume the Rangitaiki guys will get to the turnoff at about 8.15?

Yep. If you're at the Pohikura Rd turnoff at 8:15 we'll see ya there. I'm not sure if the sign is still there but there used to be 2 Pohokura Rd turnoffs - either end of the now defunct Pohokura Rd - you want the one west of Waipunga falls.

Oooh, I might bump into you then....
Weather permitting I'm traveling down the west coast to Taumaranui then round Ruapehu, Turkino valley, Taihape, Gentle Annie, Napier and then wherever the pub is.
Weather not permitting, I'm taking a more direct route.

we should try and avoid each other...
I don't want condescending KTM riders lurgies on my KLR's saddle and you don't want envious, resentful coin scratches all up and down your 990's paintwork....
If we don't hook up - make sure you include Matawhero Rd in your route (head south from Taihape and turn left at Ohutu and head up Torere and Pukeokahu Rd)

Matawhero road is on my list, the Erewhon route looked more sealed than gravel. How long are you thinking it will take from taihape to Napier?
PS. Don't worry about the paintwork, I've managed to scratch that up all by myself.

Mostly gravel sized coins, I've tried to be impartial so have decorated both sides....
I was originally planning on getting to Rangitaiki for friday night but am keeping an open mind in case I have been overly keen about time and distances achieved. I've got a room booked at Rangitaiki but if I need to I,m sure I can donate it to someone else. I will have a look at my timing and see if I can catch you at Taihape. :woohoo:

I rode to work yesterday with my ski gloves on. It was cold, foggy and by the time I had ridden 40 minutes my hands and in particular my fingers were very sore.
I got to the coffee shop, went into the toilets and put on the hot tap...:nono:
What a dumbass....:first: Prize idiot....
I spent the next fifteen minutes howling in pain outside the shop doing a Jackson moonwalk and Beegees staying alive impersonation until I could extract my EFTPOS card to pay.....
I am going to get some of those farmers mittens for the bike, they seem the best idea, take them off when the weather clears, the hands not only stay warm, they stay dry.
RD1 has them for the soft cock farmers and riders amongst us, AND I don't mind being labelled such, it frikkin hurts and ruins my day...:doctor:
The big plus is that you can still access everything with thinner gloves on, although I won't be able to use the GPS with these on, but it will only be for a hour or so, hopefully, the fog, snow, rain or whatever is thrown at me has been ridden through and is behind me...:niceone:

I however use an alloy skinned muffler to warm mine as it warms the hands and still leaves the skin on them.

Hey Clint, if leaving Rangitaiki at 8 on Saturday what time do you think the group would arrive at station??......I'm thinking that since I've ridden the Motu

Good job it is a KTM there, all the bolts, pieces should snap back nicely and the bonus is, even if there is nut left over on the floor, it can go into your spares for the ride....
Good to see you are just doing a small job...... Little details..

Yep, the oil change & valve check might be a little fiddly, but that is more than made up for by the rest of the bike being so nicely designed & built, she really is a joy to work on.
Yep just a small job... I thought everybody did a frame up rebuild before every big ride? Anything less is mechanical negligence I reckon :nono:
