View Full Version : DRZ400E wheels conversion?

I've just purchased a DRZ400E and to spice up my road racing life and lessen the stress on my poor old GSX400 post classic bike I'm going to motard the DRZ.

I've got a GSXr250 3" front with disc etc and are looking a 4" rear. Has anyone done such a conversion I can pick their brain as to whats required. Is the DRZ front brake up to the task or will it need a road caliper and M/C upgrade? Do road "mags" introduce any issue other than weight?

With this wheel choice does this limit me to tyres? 110-115 front and 140-150 rear. I read the GPRA-10's are good and come in that size.

I dont have $2k for motard wheels so I'm planning on the whole conersion costing $600ish including a rear wheel and tyres (I already have a front).

Cheers

I think you'll need to look at a wider rear 5- 5.5 at least to get a decent tyre selection

Most matards only run 4.5" rear with 160 tyre (I think)......theres only so much room back there!

correct, vast majority of Re oops, I mean MOtards run 4>4.5" rims, and 150/160 rears ( chain clearance is an issue on most, tend to chew the LH side of a 160 on the over-run, but not a big deal.)
Try GPRa10's or Bridgy BT090's - Bridgestone have a NEW tyre coming, perfect for this application and in 150 and 160 sizing, but still a couple of months away at this stage. also some seriously good specialist SM slicks

Goldfren do a purpose made pad for the DogRooter caliper, but with Roadrace compound friction material - the boys at Dirty Action have some on the shelf, your favourite shop can access them for you quite easily.
Just tell 'em Budda sent you .......

and if you want to go the wire wheel route, talk to Keiran at Murray Thorns in Motueka - spied a couple of OEM DRZ400SM front rims there the other day

still reckon the best thing to do with an FXR150 is bung a DRZ motor in it !!!

Just finished a motard conversion on my DR350 for $550 using RGV250 wheels, wasn't to difficult, just had to get some spacers made up and a relocation bracket made for the front calipher. Now can enjoy road and trail.
DRZ front brake will be fine, making the backet up is the tricky bit!
Your welcome to PM me if you want to take a look

Hey all I've started the conversion and will get some photo's tonight......What I need/would like to know is what gearing I will need to run on the DRZ for Levels/Ruapuna? ie what do the DRZ400SM's have as gearing (it would be a good starting point)

DRZSM stock final gearing is 15/41 and stock tyre is 140/70X17.
This gives 102kph @ 6000rpm in top (5th).

13/42 might be a bit low geared....better go shopping for a 14 front? The fronts in, need to machine up a caliper spacer.....the rear is well underway.

Today got the front end complete with a caliper mount. the r/h side of the rears complete, just need some machining on the sprocket carrier and shes all done. Got a 160 slick on the rear and a 120 to go on the front.

Looking good. The Motard field is growing very quickly, everytime we go to Teretonga there is a new bike. Will you be riding the King of Levels on the 18th July? There is a big field of Motard's in ChCh and we picking up a couple new ones from Dunners in the next month or so.
Gear it to max out at 170 and you will find that suits Levels, Teretonga and possibly Ruapuna as the 400 may struggle geared any higher. Check your gearing and speed at http://www.gearingcommander.com/
Changing tyres makes a huge difference coz when I dropped profile from 70% to 60% it dropped max speed by 8kph!
Smeghead (Mark) used to run a DR400 if you want to ask him about gearing.

all finished, except that the GSX rear runs a 530 sprocket. No test ride! We tried to machine the sprocket down to a 520 but was too hard. I've got a sprocket on order so next weekend is testing, the week before its first outing in anger!

Nah Burts too far too expensive.....and I have plenty of riding coming up. I was surprised that you wernt up with me giving me the hurry up. I was bloody happy with my mid pack results on the slug. The tyre package was a bit of an unknown but seemed to work well. I have a short vid of practice I'll put up tonight unfortunatly the camera didn't like riding with me on the Motard.:pinch:
