View Full Version : Lula & geestring's 2009 Rat Bike
We are on a mission to build a Rat Bike for the 2009 Cold Kiwi.
Starting with nothing but a shed, some tools and motivation. Looking for something that is over 400cc that will handle hill climbs and many burn-outs.
We have 2 months to build and we are based in Auckland.
Offers and suggestions welcomed to get this project off the ground . . .

Then Sponsorship.

What's the budget?
That is the amount of money you estimate it will cost to finish the project:niceone:
What's the budget?
It's limited. Couple of hundy at the most, it's a rat bike so we are hoping to build most of it out of donated parts . . .

There's trouble in the cockpit
What is it?
It's the bit up the front where the pilot sits... but that's not important right now...

What are your suggestions for our Rat Bike?
Know anyone with some old engine and frame in their shed that 2 girls can re-work and clean up at the Cold Kiwi?

Hey Lulu,
A mate has an old suzuki frame and engine and other bits in his shed. I'll ask him if he wants to let me have it. Do you guys need a hand building this... Hopefully it's a two smoker, I love working on those engines.

Anyone out there who has got an 'old shitter' lying around reveal yourselves . . .
geestring and I are also keen to pop a few tyres on it as well so it's got to last the hill climb and then the burn-out comp :devil2: But we will take anything!

Ahh, ah! Finally someone has something of substance for geestring and I. Would be awesome if you could find out about the Suzuki for us.
Helping hands and donations are always good to have so thanks for the offer.
We have 2 months to build so might have to have a couple of Rat Bike shed parties to get the project finished.
I think i'm said mate.
I've got the frame, forks, swingarm, and an engine (All GSX400X).
Don't know what condition the engine is though.

yo i got some indicators, big ugly front light and tail light you can have if you wanna pay for a courier, indicators from rg150, and lights from spada..
Right, here's a brief idea of the bits that i've got lying around. Turns out that the boxes that I got with my Track Bike contained more than I thought.
We've got:
Frame
Engine (Don't know if it runs or what though)
Swingarm
Shock & Shock Linkage
Forks
Rear Brake with Resoviour
Bars and stems
Radiator and Fan
Muffler & Headers
Airbox
Carbs
Chain
Pegs
Wheels Hubs & Axle bolts
Throttle, Clutch & Brake cables
Wiring Loom
CDI
Kickstand
And some other odds and sods.
I was planning on spending a year and slowly putting bits together, so 2 months is a project and a half.
Nice to finally meet you Lula. Sorry my Photography is rubbish.

Right so I head over to Gubb's place tonight to check out this GSX400X. It's a complete re-build and I'm not kidding.
There is nothing on the frame, there are boxes with wires, header, oil hoses, rear sprocket, chain, rear shock, carb, CDI unit, forks, handle grips, are you getting the idea? And then I find myself and Gubb staring at the engine that is sitting on the garage floor wondering if the thing would have a pulse should geestring and I hook it up to its vital organs?
At this stage there are still options A) we take Gubb's kind offer with the GSX400 and work furiously every night to put it together, with the possibility of finding the engine is ceased, then head to the Cold Kiwi ratless and watch everyone else riding their bikes up the hill climb and pop tyres, or B) we continue our search for another project that is more intact and we know the engine is going to fire up.
Help me obi wan kenobi . . .

If you take the cover off the end of the crank you can wind it over using a big spanner & see if it is seized, you can do a crude compression test in the same manner.
Ask Gubb to contact the previous owner & ask what he remembers of the spare engine. If he has already blown it then this isn't the project for you.
You don't NEED all the wiring , just the essential wires to make it go ...... headlight, indicators ETC are not required... but as no one knows which wires are for what expect some issues in that area.
yo i got some indicators, big ugly front light and tail light you can have if you wanna pay for a courier, indicators from rg150, and lights from spada..
Thanks gatch but our rat bikes hold no unnecessary bling; our new toy will run on the bare basics. geestring and I are building this one specifically for the hill climb and burn out comp at this years Cold Kiwi :devil2:

Previous owner doesn't know anything about it, and has lost contact with the owner before him. It looks sweet as, Going on assumption (which you know what they say about it) if the engine stuffed itself then you'd probably open it up to have a look at what happened, surely you wouldn't put it back together broken though.
Then again, it's a risk.

Tonight I'm going to check out a Suzuki GS450. The guy says it has spark but may there be a carb jet blockage and he's replaced the master cylinder.
Fingers crossed this could be the project :devil2:
Ok here it is!!!!!!
geestring and I are now the proud owners of a Suzuki GS450 T 1981. Take a good look because you are not going to reconise it in weeks to come. This is the Rat Bike of year, it will stripped, ripped and re-built.
No time consuming cleaning, washing, polishing, adding shiny parts that do nothing. None of that, forget about it!
You will all see the machine of death take you out at Cold Kiwi!!!! It will eat it the hill and burn the rubber like seen you've never seen before. We will shame you. See you there - Cold Kiwi get ready you've been warned.

What's the prob, Lula?
New Plymouth is a bit far away!
What's the prob, Lula?
Well where to I start?!
Geestring and I wanted a project and we definately have just that.
We've taken the cylinder head cover off, which was put on back-to-front. There is debris like leaves and shit in the heads, so that needs a good clean out. It's been out in the weather for a while.
There was two different spark-plugs in it (one was just sitting in there!) so we think the new spark-plugs needed are BR-8ES's.
The guy we got it off clearly had no idea what he was doing and has tried to strip it down and then put it back together. We just need someone to confirm what might be missing of it.
We wouldn't mind catching up with someone that has stripped one of these engines before so we can see how much of a lemon it is, and espically before we try to fire it up.
By the way Puddy's been great - he is a legend. Thanks mate for all your help today:niceone:

Are you trying to build a running jalopy, or something with style? I'm building a "Rat Bobber" right now and I'm using an old Kaw 250 Eliminator frame and engine. The frame is small enough to give it that 40's/50's look. It's a 6 speed with a surprising amount of torque, so it can handle the hills we have here in Tennessee atleast. The dudes talkin' about dirt bikes are right, it'll climb some hills, but it'll have as much style as a scooter...

I am fascinated by the "get large spanner, hit with larger hammer" school of mechanical repair. What were you doing to the poor thing?
My first road bike was a GSX400: basically the same as your GS450 except slightly smaller capacity and mine had 4 valves per cylinder, rather than the GS' 2. didnt make any difference to the performance (or lack of): Oh, and either of the suzukis would completely spank the Honda CB400N which was a porky POS by comparison.

I guess you weren't to know, you haven't been invited to one of our workshop sessions.
We have had to strip this engine down and re-build it because of its condition. Tonight we will see if it is going to run or not.
If its a lemon then we will be moving onto our back-up engine which is the GSX450.
Lula
18th June 2009, 20:38
Ok had a few people asking me how we got on so here is a bit of an update.
We didn't finish up until 1am this morning on that last workshop session, so the hours are going in.
Over the past few weeks geestring and I (and a few, most from KB that have come to some of our workshop sessions) have stripped the motor right back and put it together again.
It's been a bit of a major to get the timing sussed but we're pretty sure its all good now. Count 20 pins not 18, 180 degree turn there, line up this with that, blah, blah. For a minute we thought it might have a bent valve.
So last night we managed to turn it over and thankfully we have compression, but not had it running yet. We've put it back into the frame, put the carbs on, filled it with oil, new sparkplugs in, head will go on and now it is ready to recieve power and fuel.
Then sorting out what wiring is coming off.
This week we plan to have it running and then once that has happened its onto the good stuff - giving it a full make-over.
You have no idea what condition it was in - the iginition was zip tied on and it was out of a Cortina car! Missing and incorrect screws here and there, leaves and crap everywhere, oh not to mention the dog pubes that stick to the oily bits.
Anyway so far so good.
I have a vid of it turning which will post up soon again for those that are interested.
Go the mighty Rat Bike!

Good on you two... how come 20 pins on the cam chain and not 18?????
Someone stupid was reading the wrong page out of the manual! Bwaahhh
For anyone rebuilding this kind of engine you might like to know that if its a GS250 its 18 pins and if its a GS400 its 20 pins from the 1st marker to the 3rd.
I am learning these kind of specs very quickly!!

Hey Gubb,
We have used a few bits and pieces out of the box. Mostly still quite focused on getting this engines timing right and then on to its look.
We are going to building our next Rat Bike using that engine of yours and the bits out of the box - that one will be a real mongrel having to use a lot of other parts from other bikes.
When you're visiting Dorkland next you'll have to come by geestrings and see our project in the flesh

now this is a rat bike.
The essence of a true rat bike is keeping a motorbike on the road for the maximum amount of time while spending as little as possible on it, Survival bikes look similar to, but are different in purpose from rat bikes--they are modified for stylistic reasons: Wikipedia
so lula and g string, you're building a survival bike but if you leave it to become a rattly old piece of shit and fix it with rubber bands, chewing gum and bits of wood, it will probably become a rat bike.

Oh dear...idleidolidyll are you are you saying that the majority of us are really riding Rat Bikes?
Perhaps you are right - this could be a Survival bike because it is built for a stylistic reason....and that reason is.......it is going to own the Cold Kiwi hill this year :gob:

I looked at my post again and realise it may be miscoonstrued.
I'm right behind the gals, it's a fantastic exercise and I hope it all works out well for them. They are working very hard and have clear goals in mind.
I posted that one because we had a discussion one thursday bike ride night about what constitutes a rat bike. I'm an old bastard of course and I remember what a rat bike was original described as, I mentioned this to the gals at the time; the post is supporting info.
Lula is correct, the definition of Rat Bike has morphed into a wide desription and in many minds includes old bikes rebuilt just as theirs is being rebuilt.
I remain a purist though; for me, a Rat Bike will always be a piece of shit that has pretty much always run but is held together with spit, glue, blue tack, string and wishful thinking as per the pics.
In closing, good on yer gals, that is a bloody cool project and you'll learn plenty from the experience. My only additional suggestion is to ignore those who say you must do it a particular way: let G string do some dodgy repairs, she'll get it right eventually and will learn by doing rather than looking over shoulders, same for Lula, just do what feels right

Sorry Lula, my racing days are past.
You only get to break your back once and I've had my turn. A hillclimb is one of the most likely ways I can think of for a repeat performance.

Last night was another lengthy workshop session, and one with plenty of fire.
For this one geestring and I invited SkidMark over to take a look at this stubborn engine.
He really did put in the hardyards on trying to get this thing to run, and I have to admitt he seemed to know quite a bit about these engines.
Timing set this way, that way, valve settings done, several batteries used, and a lot of petrol which equaled a lot of fire! Not to mention the whole can of engine start used.
Yes we had one or two flames and then a major flare up which had us all running like ants looking for something to put it out with (we had already used the fire extinguisher, which was now empty) so glup water it was, but thankfully it worked.
So now we are still trying to work out why this pigdog is not running and have nicely blackened burnt wiring....but hey this bike has been binned, skinned and now burnt...surely it is a true Rat Bike!
If it doesn't go up that f*ckin hill it will definately be thrown off one.
Here is a vid of it before it caught of fire a couple of times and the pics below are of the smoke clearing and the remains of the fire extinguisher dust...

Lula,
Put the exhaust pipes on so it's less likely to catch fire.
Also, if the flames were shooting out the back of the carbs and it's not running (only coughing), the cam timing is still likely to be out.
Obviously Gstring will have fun doing that wiring, but at least you know where it all goes now.

Do you mean the wiring is getting lovely and black when tryin to start it or that it is lovely and black due to fire?
First case... you got a short.

Good comment, I suspect the wiring isn't why it caught fire but be methodical.
Why did it catch fire? Was it a backfire setting light to fuel or was it a wire that overheated and burst into flames?

We are on a mission to build a Rat Bike for the 2009 Cold Kiwi.
Starting with nothing but a shed, some tools and motivation. Looking for something that is over 400cc that will handle hill climbs and many burn-outs.
We have 2 months to build and we are based in Auckland.
Offers and suggestions welcomed to get this project off the ground . . .
your household sounds exciting , how about modify old suzuki impulse or similar , good 4 cylider rev high and robust for burnout action

And it has blackened the wires it would also mean that they are perished... and could be arcing to ground somewhere causing a host of problems...
As I said.. i'll have a gander if ya need.
Kinda reminds me of the 750 I had where the instruments would go dead and it would run funny everytime I turned left..... ended up being a tiny crack in the wiring arcing on the fork when I turned left blowing a main fuse.... good times finding it though hahahaha
Fark mention a G string and you get 17 pages of baggage, cmon Lula tell them you ride Honda ffs. :bye:
