Well, the 1198/1098 sure is a nice piece isn't it? I mean it's slow in comparison to a Gixer Thou; but it really has something, doesn't it.
It's skinny, and I found that I slid forward onto the strangely pointed tank, but they're an experience to ride...
So, apologies to all you amateur mechanics (AKA Ducati owners) that I've offended by mocking.
Hmm, how come KTM can't get the throttle to work like a Ducati?

The flow characteristics of a 75 degree vee twin make it impossible to produce the same consist fueling characteristics of a 90 degree vee twin...I mean everyone knows that!
At least all the 990 owners do......
As for getting a ride on a 1098, barsteward. :bash:

We could argue this forever - and will! - so here is another comparison from Motorcycle.usa for times on various tracks http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/9/475/Motorcycle-Article/2008-Superbike-Smackdown-V.aspx
The whole article on all 5 bikes is worth reading but the essence of it is two of the five writers - who have a racing pedigree - picked the 1098.
Why am I not surprised........:first:

$34k buys the entry level one, it doesn't get interesting until $41k - 1098R.
If you took a GSXR1000 and spent money on carbon wheels, full Ohlins, Brembos all around, Yoshi everything else, you'd still be able to fly to Vegas for one hell of a weekend with drugs and hookers...
But, the 1098/1198, it is a class act...

But the R model is not legit in NZ superbike rules from what I've understood, so you can't really race it.
If you were to race a S model, then again the NZ rules stop you from changing the most basics chassis stuff that seems to be the norm at other places where they are being raced. (if I'm reading the NZ rules correctly)
So are they just overpriced poser machines built for the street?
Not even the $70k R model comes with the chassis setup the corse RS bikes are using.
(Don't get me wrong, I'd love to trash one at a track, but there must be a good reason no one does it?)

BST wheels, $8k
Ohlins front $16k
Ohlins rear $3k
Yoshi everything $6k
A $55,000 GSXR1000. Nice
But, the 1098/1198, it is a class act...I can't totally agree. I has a lot of pretty elements, but it ultimately just looks like a tarted up 916, and a bit rushed to market. I expect that it'll have brought them enough time and R&D revenue for the next one to be a real corker though  It's a bit sad when most of the loveliness comes from the bolt ons that come with it, rather than the bike itself.
/edit: Probably the best thing going for the 1098 series is that it's pretty conventional looking, at a time when the Japs are trotting off down some really weird routes... ZX10R indicators anyone? :puke:

Appology accepted. You know I find that Duc's are well down in the power stakes on paper but something in the formula works just right and I don't have any issue keeping up with bikes that theoretically should be able to toast me. And the way it lays down the power its got is just bliss.
I see you have discovered the Ducati position. I even experienced it on a monster which looked totally upright. I'd even go as far to say that I find the tank position very comfortable and right. I have a theory that the position lends itself to the handling and that you use more of your body to control the bike.... but its just a theory.

Who was it that won sbk last year with the bike that weighd the most, lowest straight line speed and least power...on paper. japas are straight line bikes, dukes go round corners.

What would happen if inline fours were allowed to be 1200cc as well in WSBK? Would the twin make it up in the corners?
Would the extra power be usable power or too much (tyre wear etc)?

You would be better putting their MotoGP championship win on a pedestal. Admittedly it's just the one, but at least it was earnt on a level playing field.

I rode a 1098R (which has the 1200cc motor) at Manfeild a while ago and can say out of all the bikes ive ridden in my life (which is a shite load as anyone who knows me will tell you), its by far one of the fastest... no shit!

Interesting read. US$125K gets you a bike that makes 200hp with full ohlins etc. but can only do 1500kms on one engine with one rebuild included at 750kms then it is finished and another needs to be sourced at US$22,500.
Shit, I know it is a Ducatti but c'mon, you could build at least 2 Jappa bikes such as a GSXR or R1 with higher specs and much much much better longevity and still have change for spare part when you bin it.
Even if I had the cash, this just does not make sense to me.

Okay, this is going to piss some people off.
In terms of power and acceleration -my GSXR kills the Ducati 1098 - it's not even close. I'd be more than willing to do a standing start, and a roll on if anyone wants to see this. The Ducati has a very tall first gear. Drop a tooth or two on the front, and it'd be closer.
In terms of race track - getting the power down with the GSXR is tough, takes a pretty competent rider to ride it at 10/10ths. I think the Ducati has significantly better brakes, but it dives excessively. The Ducati felt more composed.
the Ducati has more presence, it's classier in comparison, and it will hold it's value better.
But, the GSXR is faster.
