piss off buddy! You clowns can have your 400 a week. I like tangi with 40 a week. Whoop sections are great stamina training. Mind you the whoops have got a lot more rugged since i first rode there a few years back. Can we borrow your bobcat?

I am injured myself at the moment so will probably give it a miss to. I got a fucked ankle it's coming right should be sweet for next weekend. Gives me some time to finish my rebuild I've been a bit slack.

torn ligaments in shoulder and a sus rib... Dunno, didn't have the chest x rayed. Not too bad considering... bike rode out ok but i'm yet to have a good look at it (it stays at a mates). The quad that i hit broke a steering arm and folded up one of the rims onto the caliper so that it wouldn't turn, smashed up plastics/headlights... so i got off pretty good lol. The other rider was KO'd on the ground face down wheezing his ass off but i couldn't move/breathe so i just lay there till my mates arrived.

Was pretty full on. I was top gear hoonin it. wasn't a sharp corner but it's amazing how fast he appeared (he was pinned too) i don't think i even touched the brake just saw blue plastic as i flew into and bounced off him in the air lol. We were only in the gorge a few mins from the carpark on our way out. Quad guy was on his way in. We have always said it'll happen there 'cos we tend to go hard as it's the last blast before the days over... no more racing through the gorge for me... I have a mate who fell into the river going through there too. choppered out etc.

Sounds like your very lucky, could of been way worse.

One thing that really fu*ks me of with the council is that Karapoti is basically the only place you can legally trail ride in the Hutt Valley. They know about all the accidents and how common they are in karapoti yet they are doing nothing to help

Maybe making it a one way loop track would be better, it actually wouldn't be that hard to do. But as if that's ever going to happen.

I wish you best of luck and a speedy recovery

My thoughts are, you need to self regulate! If you get the council involved that'll be when the shit all starts, an sooner rather than later, it will get to hard for them ( osh and Health and safety issues) and you will be banned from there. Even this one accident could make them close it down to MX.
Unwritten law here, keep to the left, all go the same way etc. Not that it always works LOL!!
Maybe you guys need to stay flying under the radar, don't ask the council and get hold of some old real estate agents signs and use the back of them to make some Two way slow down signs etc. And some of those red arrows to make the fast tracks one way??
Just a few ideas, no big deal?

problem with a loop track is i guess you would have to include the staircase and rock garden, bit tricky for novices like myself.....or maybe I just learn to ride better.
And I agree, leave the council out of it, first thing they will try and do is shut it down cos its a safety issue.

Ride it till the red

Dead right there Reckless, Ever ridden Foxton Beach Hazza? Ya won't now coz it's policed and you must be adhering to road rules to be there.... Wasn't that way 5 years ago but stupidity, crashes and complaints made the council get involved and it's all over....

As for Karapoti it's always gonna be a case of do what ya can to prevent crashing.... But it's largely a risk you take when going in there. The permit's (which most won't have) say something about two way tracks and being sensible from memory but once your in there it's up to you. I was riding with Kez that day (although not at the time of the accident) and yeah there were some places that we were really F'n hooning and I guess it's a choice we make..... I've had some very close calls (skinned knuckles from another riders bark busters scraping my hand as I pushed my bar under his to avoid colliding) and been on a 4wd trip where we carted out a rider who plowed into the front of one of our stationary vehicles (in a place the biker wasn't allowed to be) but how much fun would it be if we all slowed down everywhere? Kez has said he'll be slower down the gorge but I bet he'll still be racing the rest of us up Rimu Road.....

And as for a loop track? There's no other legal way to get out at the Hutt side (it's possible but we won't get into that) so how could it be done? The gorge will always be two way access. Tracks cannot just be created or the Ranger, Doc etc go crazy and boot everyone out... And the complexities of making every other track in the forest one way would be huge, impossible to police and frankly irritating as you lose half the riding....

yeah flag the council. I didn't tell the hospital where it happened for my ACC report 'cos i don't want policing up there. Twas me and Glen (quad rider) to blame and we fully accept that. I was pretty hard left but it's a pretty narrow track and the quad was using all of it... I would have hit the bank to get around him (not that i had time) and he would have plunged 6 meters onto the rocks of the river below if he'd turned left. I would say that quads could be a bit more careful up there as they can't keep left like we can in most places but then maybe i'm biased.

I love getting on to the cool knarly tracks in there that ya get stuck in and what not but the by product of that is... you get onto the roads and ya just wanna race.

You go there at your own risk i say... obviousely common sense has to play a part and me and glen chose to ignore the sensible part of our brain and paid a consequence

One thing i would ask is why walkers, mountain bikers, hunters, people with little kids on pushbikes go up there... It is basically the only place dirtbikes can go and these other land users are spoiled for choice. I guess they can hear us coming but still i wouldn't go up there if not on a dirtbike and prepared for the risk of injury. the amount of people i've come around a corner and seen quivering in a bush looking like they've just seen Satan... quite funny actually.. there should be a warning at the carpark explaining that us "spawn of Satan" are in there worshiping

I headed in there 1.5 hours before the boys were due to get to the carpark and still didn't get to the little hillclimb that i wanted to photoshoot before them. To make it a bit more fun it was hailing and raining as i walked the gorge and when i got up the hill it was fucking snowing! Got some ripper pics of the boys tho so here yaa

They were taken not far up the hill on the pram track. after ya cross the river go up about 700-900 metres and theres a track off to the left ya have to jump a little ditch to go up... you know it? it's just a little deviation off the main track... only takes a couple mins and your back on the main track.

Good fun. Those ruts have got bigger and bigger over the time we've been doing it. came across some 4WDS trying to get up it once... fail.

It was wet as up there but the most noticeable thing was the cold... man it was unbelievable, fuckin snowing!

Looking forward to it mate, I think I've got a fair idea of where it may be although I thought "Siberia" was more of a name for an area than a specific track.

Had a cracker up Tangimoana today, managed to make a bit of a vid that I'll get round to uploading sometime. Unfortunately missed alot of it due to helmet cam pointing everywhere but the track! And ran out of space about 5 mins before a hilarious episode of Secondfield repetitively trying and failing to pick up his bike on a slope which ended up with the bike being dragged to the bottom on it's side

Can't see the bloke with the Stop/Go sign.

Good that you guys are doing the hard yards as most these tracks just get over grown and sieze(yeah I know, spell check) to exist.

cease was the spelling you were after there mate lol. Thanks for the ups bro. It's actually good fun. Obviousely i'd rather be riding but you see sooo much when on foot ahhh how's the serenity?

Looking forward to it mate, I think I've got a fair idea of where it may be although I thought "Siberia" was more of a name for an area than a specific track.

Oh ok, where do ya think it is then? It's gonna be coool mate. Theres a couple of rutted techy climbs on clay then it opens up to a couple of sections of big wide pine needled blasting roads. it won't be very long but there's multiple possibilities for exploration at the top of it. Someone has felled a whole heap of trees over the track but we found a way around. i'm hopeing i can make an alternative route out to Karapoti carpak (dreaming i know) just need a chopper to figure out the route!

Love to comment at the fuck i got wet shit you stand next to puddle with bikes going past your going to get wet really what did you expect i would have come back to dish out seconds hahaha.

hah, yeah it made me laugh too. Although it was possible to avoid the puddle. I was sitting next to the puddle with a brand new, uninsured, 3200 dollar camera. lol... dumb fuck

Up to the right as ya shoot in from Karapoti? As ya head up towards the Rock Garden? I've blasted a couple of the open tracks but never actually mucked round with the one or two knarlier options. Not exactly sure which of them you'd be heading up (or if I'm even remotely close) but that area has been referred to as Siberia by the 4wd guys for years. I really must get a copy of that map uploaded and sent to ya, theres a couple of other bike only tracks that the old man has some stories about which I'd like to take a look at.

As for back down to Karapoti? I think you'd be rather hard pushed but ya never know... enough time off the bike and you might get it sorted. Maybe we all pitch in and buy you a chainsaw to speed up the process!

yeah that looks nice in black humps and low hours too. I wonder if he'd be keen to trade my 07 450sx?

RITTR. i know where you're talking about but naaaarp. those climbs your talking about are fukken phat. theres one with the mighty twin ruts of hell. You have to cross both ruts at pace to get to the top... reeeal tricky cunt... i haven't made it to the top yet.

Where i'm talkin about is at the Hukinga/karapoti/pram track intersection (the main intersection before the first river) right under your nose. I would have ridden within 2-3 metres of the entry to this track about 50 times but have never seen it until i went past on foot. We got far enough along it to join up to a road off Hukinga road but there is scope to make it join onto another sneaky little track that we've tried before but it got too overgrown... Once i've completed the loop with no main roads in it i'm gonna stage a race through it lol can't wait

PS a chainsaw would only slow me down but i am kinda unco' using my left arm so don't stand near when i'm a whakkin' and a slashin'

the first 4 of these are of a short, steep, soft and sandy hill climb made by a sand drift at the edge of the sand bowl at the himatangi end of the forrest. she's a bit tricky and the guy who endos his WR250 at the bottom of it discovered the horrible tree roots at the base. And after a couple attempts at the climb pat ma'groin looses his rag and starts trying to wheelie attack innocent bystanders

Any good shots of that dune jump mate? Needa catch up to see the rest of them fullsize sometime.

Did you price up prints? Still pretty keen on a biggy of that puddle wheelie from the other side if it turned out nice when big? And my wheelie roost too.... And digital copies of the rest for memories would rock. Gizza text once you've sorted it all maybe?

Again next Sunday boys? Any others keen to join us? Got a couple mates that should be up for it too

Just a question re body position for sandy hill climbs (I guess following on from the cornering in sand thread yesterday), I notice in one of the pics Humps is sitting down when he is heading up that steep hill climb, is that how it should be done? Excuse my ignorance (!) but what is the logic behind that?

Where as I also climbed it first go but I hit it standing up (with a quick duck for the branch)....

Alot like the cornering in sand I'd say it's down to the rider and the hill, I generally try and stand when climbing to get a good view, make sure the front doesn't loop on me and just coz it feels right.... for me!

Come up for a play on Sunday and after a bunch of climbs you'll get to see what feels right in what situation

If you got momentum, you can do anything how you like. But as I was taught. for a hill climb, stand up with weight forward but try to keep some weight to the rear for traction.

As always with dirtbikes, its all a fine balance in riding on the edge of the bikes limits and falling off. I like to think thats why I fall off so much anyway.... Yeah right!!
