Scum like this make me sick to my stomach. I want to get a rope and hang them from the nearest tree. Does anyone else believe we should bring back capital punishment?
Not a fan of capital punishment...
If it were still being used, there would a few innocent dead people in the ground.
On the other hand...in some cases, if the accused is found guilty beyond all doubt then...maybe.

Bell, Burton, are some of the names that come to mind to swing from a tree, there is no doubt about "an innocent" being executed, unless I missed something here, help me out.....
If you believe in the right to self defence, then surely you must believe in the right of society to defend them selfs from these "people". They must be permanantly removed from society....... rope or cell......

There are indiviuals that should certainly have no place in society.
Then there are those that have been convicted of a serious crime, for example, Arthur Allen Thomas, who ten years later was released and his conviction quashed. In that senario (had capital punishment still been in service) he probably would have hanged for the double murder of which he was innocent of.

Agree with Maha. There are definitely some cases where some people should never be let out in public again and are a drain on tax payers $$, however I for one would still not want to be a jury member where capital punishment would be the punishment handed down. Bring back chain-gangs and castration.

I am sick and tired of my tax money being spent on some fuck-knuckle c00nt like this who murders people/kids. These murderers are vicious thugs that show no remorse, and have no respect for the community or anything in it.
They do not deserve to be in our society.
In prison they get 3 meals a day, exercise, underfloor heating, TV, and even drugs FFS!! I read somewhere it costs around $40,000 per year to lock someone up!?!?!
The only thing that really shits me about the death penalty is that the victims have to deal with a lifetime pain and/or suffering but the perp gets off with death and limited suffering.
BUT....
The trouble is our justice system is absolute shyte that we often get it wrong.

Agreed, but with the current law eventually Bell and Burton will be released. Wasnt Thomas pardoned, after two trials found him guilty? Not a quashed conviction. Albeit a case of "possible" tampering of evidence. But there are cases out there of convicted criminals reoffending and one would have to say they have had there chance, they failed........

Disagree with Capital punishment,
Agree with crims working their arses off to pay their way in prison. $70,000/year for their upkeep is a lot of rocks to break... and max security costs more so they work harder.
Those found innocent later get a refund (and while I recognise it doesn't really address their loss it goes some way to restitution and avoids the "drain on society" vs. "innocent people getting murdered bny the state" argument)

If we stopped listening to the idiots like the Howard League for Penal Reform, we could reduce the cost of prisons drastically. Take away the Flatscreen TV's, the playstations, the underfloor heating (Milton Hilton anyone?). Bring back cold dark wet dungeons, bread and water and hard labour. Then maybe I could live with putting them in prison for life. But as it stands now, a prison sentence is a glorified holiday.

Beyond all reasonable doubt. "YES". ( state has a duty to protect other inocent citizens)
Guilty but reasonable doubt. "NO" (Issue suitable piece of rope with jail sentence, the state should provide options and freedom of choice)
All others should retain their human rights, the sentence should be fitting to the crime!
Full sentence must be completed, parole should be the exception to the rule!
Parole should be tangibly earned, not as of right!

Life in prison would only be acceptable if it was a privatetised prison and not costing the tax payer ....else go back to the western days Hangem High.
But they would have to meet certain criteria to qualify.
There are too many murders happening, society needs to offer some deterent as it seems people refuse to accept responsibilties.
Life behind bars getting 3 meals a day, gym, anal sex etc for some that would be an improvement in their quality of life.

But we are told smacking kids is bad,yep beating the snot out of anyone is to much force,a small open hand slap on a kids bum isn't,this is also different to an open hand whack a person gives their partner.
Failing that let him loose on the army's land area with a pair of jandels, shorts and hoodie in -6deg temp maximum, maybe 8-10 hours walk from civilisation,he'd die a nice slow hypothermic death, only bad thing towards the end he wouldn't feel it.

Just a point of clarification here.
David Dougherty was not proven innocent.
The reason he didn't get compensation.
August 1999: Grieve asks for further DNA tests on the crime scene samples.
June 2000: The new DNA tests, carried out in Tasmania, show a clear profile of another man.
November 2000: Grieve finds Dougherty has proven his innocence on the balance of probabilities and recommends he receive compensation.
Mr Grieve QC concluded that Mr Dougherty’s has established his innocence to the required standard.
David Dougherty was convicted in 1993 on charges of abduction and sexual violation by rape of a girl then aged 11. He was acquitted on retrial in 1997. The Government has now accepted, following a report by Mr Stuart Grieve, QC, that Mr Dougherty is innocent of these charges and that his eligibility for compensation for wrongful conviction and imprisonment has been established,” Mr Goff said.
July 2001: The government announces a payout of $868,728 to Dougherty and apologises to him.
May 2003: Nicholas Reekie is found guilty of the 1992 rape and abduction of Dougherty's neighbour.
Wrongfully convicted, and proven innocent by DNA. Compensation paid by the then Govt.

Thats the point..."no place in society"...not "hanging"...the issue is the judicial system.
Genestho
22nd May 2009, 14:47
No place in society, who decides that and how?
In an incomplete case, a jury has been witheld from prior violent history as part of their decision making process in sentencing, or current "on remand" violent information.
In that particular instance a jury would be unable to know if the offender is a good bugger gone wrong, or bad to the bone, therefore a danger to society.
So, my point is how could a jury without a doubt decide there is no place in society, in a hypothetical capital punishment sentence, being that in some instances, prior history appears to be released usually via media, after conviction?
