View Full Version : Stuck trying to repack my exhaust...

Hi guys,

I really need to repack my exhaust as it is way too loud, I've taken it off but cannot for the life of me get the core out of the cannister. Looks like there is a bit of silocene in there which is probably stopping me from removing it.

Any ideas of how I can get past this? Bare in mind I don't have a vice at home

Thanks in advance

Is it riveted?

End cap is but that is meant to stay on. It's screwed on but they've been removed

Basically the end pipe still stuck to the canister ae? Cut the silocene with the edge of a flathead and twist the bottom opposite from the top....had the same problem last night on a mates bikes and what ive said finally worked... Heat the edge of the canister a bit too...below the level of where the pipe fits..shake a bit, twist a bit, yank a bit...repeat until successful... haaha sounds like the birdie dance..

Try knocking the end cap/internals off and out with a a piece of pipe or thick dowel slid up the centre.Thats how i had to do it with the last two i've done.

That happened with mine, I just tapped it out with a rubber mallet.

Trust honda to make you do a gay dance infront of your mates trying to fix the damn thing.

The last bike I repacked was originally packed with pink bats and they were fair jammed in. I normally use a more coarse packing material rather than a fine packing material.

While this thread is around... Where do you buy the silicone paste stuff to put over where the end cap and muffler join? I figure regular silicone wouldn't work and you'd need some sort of high temp stuff. Bunnings? Supercheap? Bike shop? I never replaced the stuff on mine after repacking, but figure it's probably a good idea for keeping moisture out.

was it like silvery stringy stuff you had to wrap around the core in a long drawn out process? or was it like a pre made packing piece?

Yeah it was silver/white loose stringy stuff rather than the pre cut pieces

Thats the right stuff, but it doesnt work well when its packed too tight - needs to be a "light firm" fit, if you know what I mean

i used that stuff, no difference, it wasnt especially tight, i just ended up getting frustrated at how long it took to use the whole packet, it didnt even cover the whole core properly !?!?!?!?

I have a Scorpion that was singing off key and tackled to make it right, just in time it seemed as well. All the baffles were blown apart and everywhere. Anyway, whilst being pulled apart it was deemed to hard due to a dent, ending in a sliced up can.

What I was getting to was I don't recall any silicon sealant in the taking apart process. Should I use some high temp silicon goo before riveting it up? won't that be a complete mission to place?

Yeah I read that too much and too tight can make it louder. I made sure there wasn't too much. It's a shorty pipe so I didn't even use the whole bag. Hmmm.... wonder if I should get some proper fmf shit? My bro has the same setup on his just with a brand new fmf shorty and its way quieter

You need to get your hands on some silent sport packing. Its good shit and it lasts well. Not sure where from now as mine is real old. Packaging may have changed as well???? Its a bit like soft white woolly string?
Otherwise the advice here is good. Don't use batts they blow out real quick.

Pics attached. Dunno if you can read the instructions with it but here goes?

A bit of sealant on the joints never goes astray to help seal it up. BTW you can get black high temp sealer as well as red.
