Go through the western side of lake Taupo and then do Napier Taupo highway then go State Highway 2 toward Wellington, would be lots of fun but again you would most likely get closure because of snow that way as well...

Could also go via National park, could be snowing that way to...

Str8s right .. cos national park was also closed today .. and its a huge workaround to not go either of those ways. Taupo Western lakes is one of the best roads that I have ridden ... nice big sweeping roads ....but it really depends on if you want a great ride down and stay a little .. or a nice ride and stay here longer ...

Tauranga- Rotorua- Atiamuri- Whakamaru- Mangakino- Benneydale- Eight Mile Junction- New Plymouth- Wanganui- Sanson- Wellington could be an option if the middle roads are icy/covered in snow

And watch the road between Mangakino and Benneydale... if there is any ice about, it will be on that stretch of road

All really great biking roads. It will be a lot quicker to go through Cambridge and skip Benneydale, but you chop off lots of fun. Thats a 10 hour ride with minimal breaks, so get started early. Take lots of layers.

Isn't the overlander doing a deal at the mo?
Unless you can do the Western route around Lake Taupo thru Ohakune (assuming the upper Desert rd is not an option) then you are in for one hell of a big day out.

Do you not mean the Eastern side of Lake Taupo then the Taupo Napier highway. Or is it that the Western side road is better?
If the Desert Rd is closed the Napier/ Taupo highway usually is too...or at least bloody icy.

The commuter train from palmy to welly is $11, unreal, the taxi ride to the station would cost more than that easily.

Just shoot straight down the coast, cut out the cape from Opotiki.

avoid taupo. desert rd shouldn't be a problem if it's in the afternoon.

An overnight Train ride is absolutly stunning during winter through the central plateau on a clear night with a good women and hippy full of top shelf.

I'd avoid travelling anywhere this weekend as the weather looks like it's going to be crap. There are reports of black ice in Taranaki too:

Was going to say Forgotten Highway but getting to it could be difficult, and a few corners don't see sunlight in winter.

From Stratford south is usually ok any time, just NP-Stfd is tricky in morning due to ice.If the night is clear be careful,if a frost is about be very careful.
