What's the form with head injuries and racing here?
I had a bit of an off at Taupo and got a knock to the head, however at the hospital I was cleared as having no lasting effects at all. The doc even said i was ok to drive home so long as someone was in the car just in case..?
I didn't drive home, someone else did but I feel 100% and want to race at Pukekohe next weekend. MNZ have my licence and I'll call them tomorrow but wondered if anyone here knew what the rules are.
I've seen my doc this week as well and he's happy that I have no effects hanging over from the crash bar some bruising to my leg and arm.
So any one know?

Was under the impression that ya just needed a medical clearance, which you've got.
Good to see ya back into it already, saw the pics and ya looked like a rag doll.
Bloody Taupo huh..................

You will need to produce a Drs certificate to MNZ saying that you have the all clear who will then return your licence. Also if you are wanting your helmet back that you were wearing at Taupo Andrew Jones the MNZ steward at that meeting has it. I dont have his details sorry but Im sure once you get in contact with MNZ someone from there will be able to give you his contact details. Glad to hear Brian that you are ok?. Cheers Sue VMCC

Check on the MNZ web site dude, or call them tomorrow to be 100%
I think, IF Knocked out, it is a min 21 day stand down? ( Unless cleared by a head specialist, NOT the GP) ????

Cheers all........
I know the GP will clear me and the hospital did as they let me out the same day rather than keep me overnight which they said was normal procedure. I've tried looking through the MNZ site but can't find what i need so will call them tomorrow.
Sue,
I was led to believe that my helmet was beyond repair..... do you know if thats the case or was it just retained as I went off to hospital. If its had a bang I'll be speaking to Mr Shoei NZ for a replacement but would be good to know what state its in.
Certainly hope to be out this weekend for Pukekohe as there's a championship at stake......:first:

From what I got told from Andrew yesterday was your helmet has two holes in it and he was wondering whether you wanted it back. It has seen its day as being used ever again but he was just wanting to know whether or not you wanted it returned to you.

You'll need to read rules 5.8 5.8-1 and 5-8-2
http://www.motorcyclingnz.co.nz/download/Chapter_5_Licensing_Entries.pdf
5-8 Any registered competitor who has received hospital treatment shall be required to produce a certificate of clearance before competing in further events. If necessary MNZ may order a competitor to have a further examination, doctor to be nominated by MNZ and fees paid by MNZ.
5-8-1 Any competitor who knowingly competes whilst suffering from an injury or medical condition which may impair control of his/her Motorcycle is liable to exclusion, suspension or disqualification unless a medical certificate, issued by a Doctor qualified in the medical field in which the injury or medical condition falls, certifying that the rider is fit to compete in motorcycle competition is produced.
5-8-2 Any registered competitor who has received hospital treatment shall be required to send to MNZ a certificate of clearance, before being re-issued with his/her log book, before competing in further events. If necessary MNZ may order a competitor to have a further examination, doctor to be nominated by MNZ and fees paid by MNZ. Where a concussion has occurred, an automatic stand down period of 21 days shall apply.Where a competitor has three concussions in one season, the rider is required to obtain a clearance from a neuro-surgeon or similar medical specialist.
5-8-2a Where injury circumstances occur when a medical clearance certificate is required that competitors log book must be uplifted by the Steward and sent to the MNZ Office along with the Stewards Report.
The logbook will be returned to the competitor once the appropriate clearance is received.
5-8-3 MNZ may require a competitor to have a further examination by a qualified Doctor nominated by MNZ prior to further competition. MNZ will pay for this examination.

Everyone heals differently and your injury is specific to you.
You need to be examined to see if you still have any affects from the bang and whether racin with the potential of doing the same again is reasonable at this stage. If you get any symtoms Healthline (0800611116) are able to diagnose whether you need to follow up with any further action other than more rest.

Interesting this actually...I was wondering how Sam Smith at the puke Nationals round managed to have a bad off with a head bump in practice and then come back to win the first 600ss race the very next day. I'm glad he did as he at least put a kiwi in the winning mix but how is this possible? I thought the 21 days would have been enforced.
Glad your all healed up from your bad off at Taupo too bud!

I will see whats said tomorrow but as I had no effects that afternoon confirmed by the hospital or since, we'll see what the decision is.
I know what happened to Sam at Pukekohe and i'm glad he was able to ride and win the race and I'm sure someone must have checked him out after the bang to the head he took.

Yes whether its usable or not i'd still like to get it back please there's always the chance that the visor and some of the parts will be useful.

I'm sure you should be fine as you have had two checkups and both your dr and the hospital said you were fine. I guess all you have to do is provide the copy of the certificate from either and they will return your license.

True enough - but, I'm not an AMCC office bearer so I'm reluctant to make postings on their behalf

Yeah they're not the best at advertising their events. This last round was added at late notice from what I understand and you'd probably only hear about it if you're an AMCC member. In saying that, it is on the KB calendar.

As someone who has not long gotten over a brain injury, I'd be concerned that the rule simply states "Where a concussion has occurred, an automatic stand down period of 21 days shall apply". It doesn't say that if you were assessed at the track then it's okay, or if you get a clearance from a GP or a neuro then it's okay. I mean, each to their own, and someone must have made a decision about Sam, but is it 'really' worth the risk?
I'm having to wait 12 months after my surgery before being able to race again.

I was at Pukekohe on the weekend, and I wanted to know if anyone knows if the guy that came off on the bend just before the finish line is ok. My first experience of a accident :( and it wasn't very nice.

I wasn't there but I know the guy. Apparently he is in middlemore in intensive care with a broken pelvis and two fractures in his back. He will live and walk again but I understand he is in a lot of pain. Heal well Frank.

thanks, from what we saw he hit the wall pretty hard, after rolling quite a distance after the bike, which hit the bales first.... thoughts out to him.

I can't say it claimed him, but St Johns was busy... there is no good reason that if you had been there, for him to come off. He was doing everything on the mark... from our view point. So ye the track did it~!!! only Frank (as biggles calls him) knows.

More like high speed track + small run off and concrete walls = broken rider !
Could have been a number of reasons for the bike to go out under him, like ya say only he knows, or perhaps dosn't !
