If you keep the ALL the lights off, and bumpstart it everywhere, it will run for about 2 hours with the charging system removed. (provided your battery is in good nick, which if the reg/recs gone it wont be)
you can just unplug the plug to the regulator.

if you go with it plugged in, and it is cooked, you get 20+ volts across the battery, which cooks everything...
CDI's are expensive!
