Three months around Europe

In May 2011, I will begin a three month motorbike tour of Europe. The plan is to leave UK in mid May , visit the D Day beaches, the Atlantic Coast of France and Spain, down through Portugal, attend a birthday reunion in mid June south of Valencia .

I then will head for the South of France, Italy, ferry to Greece, up through the Adriatic coast , into Austria, Czech Republic, Poland and the Baltic States, then back to UK to meet a new Grandchild .

Although this is the proposed plan, I like to keep my options open- so please don't hold me to my route. The only firm dates I have is the birthday reunion in mid June, home for the Rugby World Cup in September- and some skiing on my beloved Mt Ruapehu.

I currently ride a Suzuki V strom 1000DL and yesterday arrived home after a seven day sojourn through the East Cape, Kawhia to Awakino Road and over Gentle Annie. In November I spent two weeks or so touring the South Island to take in Bert Munro.

Last year I toured Europe on my pushbike following the Danube and the French and UK canals. A blog on my trip can be found on crazyguyonabike.com/ Kiwi along the Danube. The previous year I rode from Singapore to Bangkok.

I have not hung up my cycle clips yet - China and Vietnam is on the menu. However, I just thought it would be fun to try a different mode of transport.

The recent blast around the North Island gave my equipment a good test.
So the main problem I face now is what kind of bike to buy in the UK for my tour. My current front leader is the 650 V strom, although a Yamaha tenere, Transalp or even a KLE500 is on the list. A scour through UK E bay and motorbike mags have all these models in abundance.

So roll on May 8. In the meantime there is a lot of fish and crays to be caught .

  1. Riding around Europe Post 15: Brasov to Ruse

Hayden's big band was playing full pelt in my head when I woke next morning. Luckily I had some fruit juice and water and took two panadol to help quell the noise.
I remembered I had made some commitments and it was not until I found the piece of paper in my shirt pocket with all the instructions where to meet at 11am that things became clear or, at least, less cloudy. It was now 9.30. I had to shave, shower , buy some kind of wedding present and find Magda's house.

  2. Riding around Europe Post 14: Odessa to Brasov

It is the question you hear from customs officials all over the world.
“ Are you carrying a sword?”
“ A sword?” I asked, making thrust and parry gestures like a senile Zorro.
“Yes ,a sword.” He was not joking . He was after all a customs official on the border of one of the most unhappiest countries in the world, Moldova.
    “ No Sword”
    “ What about drugs ?”
Yes, I have drugs” His beady eyes lit up – Ukranian customs official

  3. Riding around Europe Post 13: Kiev to Odessa

You could see the road to Odessa from Kiev was part of a centrally planned economy – the potholes were so uniform and frequent. Actually that is a little cynical, the road was not bad, I was able to maintain 80kph and there was hardly any traffic.

There were heavy rain showers and I try not to ride in them, but it was such a soulless landscape, flat, dour and nowhere pleasant to stop I pushed on. At times, I was the only vehicle moving as the Ladas and Kazam trucks ...

  4. Riding around Europe Post 12: Krakow to Kiev

The signs were there. The sharp intake of breath by the Polish mechanic servicing the bike in Lublin, “ You are going where?” Then there was the three hour wait at the Polish border while they “fixed” the computor.

After that it was the Ukrainians pushing us forward in the line. Like lambs to the slaughter perhaps? At the border I met a Norwegian on a Harley. His name was something like Mogturd Mogturdson so I called him... Mog. He told me he was a Philosophy Lecturer ...

  5. Riding around Europe Post 11: Mostar to Krakow

From Mostarrmy plan was to head for Sarajevo, then onto Banja Luka, cross the border into Slovenia and then head north to Prague.

Well that was the plan, Maureen, my GPS didn't do Eastern Europe. I had planned to download the maps but didn't get around to it. So it was back to maps and compass. But identifying towns and direction by using the cyrillic alphabet was pretty difficult Needless to say I got lost. Actually it was quite a pleasant time. Bosnia is heavily ...

  6. Riding around Europe Post 10: Dubrovnik to Mostar

Before I bang on about my travels north from Dubrovnik, I would like to crave your indulgence for a digression. No you say, well tough because I am going to anyway. I have a “friend” who sang in a band which for a nanosecond enjoyed some fame. Indeed , he was interviewed by then pop prince, Peter Sinclair and was amongst the first band members ever to wink directly at the camera on a local TV pop show. Actually , he was so taken by Peter Sinclair that he went to a barber asking for ...

  7. Riding around Europe Post 9: Bol Nuevo to Dubrovnik

The road from Bol Nuevo , Spain to Bari in Italy provided a glimpse some of the worst aspects of society.

It starts pleasantly enough, winding through the hill to Cartagena. From then on it just goes backwards. In the 70's this coast was the premier package holiday destination. To meet demand hotels were built and designed by architects and developers whose catch cry was “ Yes I know it looks cheap and nasty but the money I make from it means I won't have to ...

  8. Riding around Europe Post 8:Resting in Bol Nuevo

I didn't realise how much the daily joy of riding the bike had taken out of me. My first few days at my friend's home in Bol Nuevo were spent sleeping 10 hours a day. In addition, after having being solo for so long , it was hard to take in and concentrate on the many different conversations going on.
Glyn and Jan were lovely hosts. They had visited this part of Spain for over 30 years and moved permanently here in 2000. They bought the shell of their house and Glyn frustrated ...
