Boring stuff about your boring life.
……..........Dick did not run to start the fun, He did not take a leap. He did not stoop, but made a swoop At a steady forward creep! …Now I’m not saying that 2010 is Deadeye Dick and I’m Eskimo Nell, but so it is that 2010 has made its presence felt to me, more of a whimper rather than a roar. I’ve barely done 1,000Kms since the beginning of December! That’s nearly two months in the heart of the riding season! I generally do more than that in the middle of ...
This has been a most unusual year, it seems to have gone so fast and yet so much has happened, the weather has been pretty crappy for riding and yet I have still managed to do 25,000Kms, I seem to be just plodding along at work and yet we’ve bought out our business partner and bought a rental property….or at least the bank did!! The highlights as far as rides go would have to be doing my first Southern Cross, but more particularly, the day Steve and I rode from Cape Reinga to Wellington ...
Ann & I ended up leading Brownie, in between two groups and sat around 110’ish. We passed the first group as they were checking their ride sheet, probably around Tapuiwahine, then they slotted in behind us as well. We hit some quite wicked roadworks and I was looking to the right side of the road for the cluster of signs that would indicate Aria, when we whistled past Ramaroa Rd. They must have removed the signs whilst doing the roadworks, so we swung around and I sent the others on as I marked ...
With the 1000 Km Ride done, our attention was switched to the ACC Protest Ride to Parliament as StoneY (the organiser) had requested that Ulysses conduct the Ride Briefings at the Papakowhai & Avalon start points. This was supposedly because Ulysses are perceived to be ‘mature and responsible’ riders, (they obviously didn’t have me in mind) as well as commonly being involved in and conducting group rides. After initial contact I passed this off to Ken (Wgtn Rides Committee) & Jim ...
What an awsome day! Great weather, great route, great bike and great mates! After Grub’s tragedy on this ride last year and the problems encountered with nearly half the field not completing, we had to go back to the drawing board to address our route setting along with other improvements to make the day easier to run. Fortunately there are a few groups out there organising events like this and they had some pretty good ideas for us to borrow. With a prescription for ...
Two weeks on and the Grand Challenge is now just another memorable ride that resulted in a clean-up job for the bike that took about 2½ hours, thanks to the incessant rain and wet roads. Since then I haven’t done much riding. Just a wee jaunt around the bays last week, I attended the ACC protest rally at parliament yesterday and today we had a Ulysses social (short) ride. For a low key, last minute event, there must have been 400-500 and maybe more at parliament, so that would have ...
(Continued from Pt 1)............With that done, the usual rituals completed, we were back on our way and I opted to bring up the rear. From my perspective, in these conditions, this is actually the worst place to be because you cop all the crap thrown up from the other bikes. Also, when following another bike at night, my preferred option is to sit close behind within the range of my low beam and ride off the lights of the bike in front, however in these conditions one has to sit back because if ...
It was a long slow wait for this year’s Grand Challenge (my 4th), until the last month which seemed to fly by and all of a sudden we were away again. Last week I had the bike booked for a service, pre-empting the 78,000Km check at 76,500Kms, as well as replacing the Metzler Z6 with a new Avon Storm on the front, a new air cleaner, new left main bulb, front right fork seal and the usual pre-GC super WoF check to ensure no problems when Brian Rusty and his crew did their scrutineering. ...
