  1. A Cross To Bear

Shortly after Grub died in November, Nasty mentioned she planned to get a road cross made up, so Steve and I were both more than happy to escort her up to the crash site when it was made and that came about this weekend. The cross was ready over a week ago but Steve has been pretty busy so it was decided that Saturday would be the day, even though the forecast didn't look too great.

Fortunately, as the day drew nearer, the weather wasn't looking too bad so Nasty headed up to Wanganui ...

  2. Ride-In the New Year

The first day of 2009 dawned sunny and clear and with nothing in particular to do, we felt the need for a ride, so decided to go to Masterton to visit and pay our respects at my fathers grave.

By the time we got ready it was 1205 when we left and a very warm 22° as we puttered along the Hutt Road, encountering the odd caged psycho, but staying well clear of trouble. There's a lot to be said for reading body language, even when it is a cage, but having plates like HIRISK certainly ...

  3. 2008 In Retrospect

What another great year it’s been! At this time last year I decided I had blown the budget and should ease up on the K's after having done 30,000 for the year. I didn't do very well though because I've managed 28,000 this year, which is odd because it feels like I've done a lot less riding this year.

    My highlights for the year were;

Going to the Australian Tennis Open in January, which was a good trip even though I’m not really into tennis. I’d probably prefer Melbourne ...

  4. MDA Run - 28-30/11/2008

Another year has rolled by and another Muscular Dystrophy ride (my 4th) has been done, but this year Ann joined me. Of the 14 bikes, 5 carrying pillions, only 3 hadn't been before so most knew what a great weekend we were in for when we met at the Brown Owl shops for a departure at 0900 hours on Friday.

This year Ann and I decided to dress for the occasion as Santa's Mr & Mrs Pix-E (the official photographer for the trip) and we had my mum whisk up a couple of capes. I'd checked the ...
  5. Brett (Grub) Collings - RIP

I wrote this the day after Brett died to help me through the 'process' of witnessing a tragedy. It wasn't intended for general consumption, but I have decided to post it after being encouraged to do so by Kari and others. I still struggle with the fact that the incident happened, I speculate on what could have caused Brett to 'lose it', and the fact that, if it happened to any one of those riding with him, we would probably still be here. That he was on this type of ride, knowing the risks to himself, ...

What a day! Where to Start???

After the successful day last year in which we ended up with 19 riders and lot's of positive feedback, we thought about what had gone right and wrong in order to improve the event and over a period of time, thought about interesting prospects for this years route.

In the end, we decided that SH43, or the Forgotten Highway should be the focus of the ride and then it was a matter of filling in 1000Kms, getting there and back on roads that ...

  7. Manfield Training Day

After a busy week at work and sorting a few bits for the 1000Km Ride next week, we had the Training Day at Manfield to look forward to on Saturday. The weather forecast was quite variable all week and on Friday it looked like we might be in for a really crappy day, but a quick squiz at the rain radar at 0530 Saturday morning was reassuring that we should get through most of the day unscathed, however, coming home might be a different story.

With the prospect that the 'wets' could ...

  8. Just Another GC.....Yeah Right!

I have just completed my third Grand Challenge (GC or 1000miles in 24hours) and this was to be my first ‘normal’ one because my first was the 20th anniversary of the event, so it had a bit more hype with a film crew videotaping the whole affair and my second was the 21st anniversary so that had a 500Km extension added to mark the occasion with 2100Kms. So, hopes of doing ‘Just Another GC’ were put to rest this weekend as I believe, there is no such beast!

I registered early in the ...
