Well, nothing was straightforward on this job. As fast as one problem was solved another reared it's head. Starter, rear wheel and drive belt sorted. Just put her back together now, no worries. Awayatc discovered bearing in clutch was buggered. Into town for that. Then replacing the seals discovered that one had been put in the wrong way originally and one of the rings had been left out completely. Whoever worked on this bike before I bought it did not know what they were doing. Also primary cover gasket needed replacing and needed a new primary chain, cos there was no adjustment left in the old one. Into town again for those parts. Put her all back together - done.

After a full days work at awayatcs the drive belt is on. Long day but went pretty well really. Will try and describe but I don't have manual in front of me and I'm not very technical so bear with me. First off primary cover came off - all good. Then had to undo the big nut at the front. Awayatc had made the tool to stop the sprockets moving following the harley specs. Nut was on so tight that it bent the tool. He improvised with some bits out of the socket set and with an almighty effort got it undone. Next starter had to come out. Had been having problems with that so got it checked while it was out. One of contacts worn. Being replaced so starting problems solved. Next took rear wheel off. Awayatc discovered wheel bearings were buggered. Replaced them. Had to take off bracket for exhaust pipes and shocks on left side. Then put new belt on. No drama there. Rear wheel back on. Awesome. Tomorrow starter motor back in, primary cover back on and all done. Huge thanks to awayatc for saving me megabucks at the bikeshop and also for an awesome learning experience. He did all the work really.

The new pipes look and sound awesome IMHO. Took her out for a run and there doesn't seem to be any loss in performance either, so it's all good.:woohoo:
Was going to tackle the oil and filter change this arvo but it's bloody cold out in the garage, so I think I'll leave it for another day.

Got that done, then took the mounting rings off the old pipes and WTF I can't get them on the new ones. Anyway, they are all marked up and tatty looking, so think I will just get new ones tomorrow and get them to fit them for me. FFS does anyone else make this much of a meal out of a simple job or is it just me?? :bash:
Picked up new oil filter while at the bike shop. Get some oil tomorrow and that's the next job to do. I must be bloody mad.

Anyway, finally decided to have a go at fitting the drag pipes that I have had for about two years. Bought these soon after I got the bike but then heard that the performance is not very good so have held off. Finally sick of looking at the stock ones so trying the drags. If they're no good will have to fork out for some others. Has taken me two days to finally get the old ones off. Finally, managed that but despite using half a can of crc I can't get the bracket that supports the pipes together off. Have had to take pipes into the shop to see if they can get nuts undone. Otherwise will have to fork out for a new bracket I guess.Hopefully will be done today and then i can spend the next week trying to get the new ones on.

Hiya. I have just started trying to do my own work on my bike. OMG what a friggin nightmare. Thought I would record my efforts on here a] as a record for myself, b] so other noobs can get some ideas and not repeat my mistakes or c] so you can have a good laugh at my efforts.
A fellow KBer very kindly spent a whole day working on my bike and giving me some useful tips. He fitted my new indicators which I have had in the drawer for 6 months. Panel beated my drive belt guard. [ I bent this up by trying to take off on the bike with out removing the D lock first . That happened not long after I got the bike. Also managed to fix my brake light which wasn't working. He tried to explain the electrical workings to me but at the moment it's over my head. Science was never my strong point.
After noticing an oil leak from my primary cover, he suggested we have a look in there and change the oil. Helped me drain that and refill it. I knew I had an oil leak and had been regularly checking my oil. Unfortunately, I was checking my engine oil, not the primary .
Discovered thick black oil with gloopy bits and only 600mls instead of the recommended 870 to 1000mls.
Also, noticed a hole in my drive belt. So I'm trying to source a replacement at the moment. Bugger! Big bucks. Have had two prices of 430 and 450, so currently trying to find something cheaper on the interweb. Apparently it could keep going for a few thousand ks but could also go anytime.
