We didn't make to the track day this round, so drove up early on Sat morning. Nothing like an early morning road trip, good coffee on the way (I recommend the coffee cart on the right side of the road in Otaki!) and good yarns. We came well prepared this round and had a sweet set up including a table, coffe plunger, jug and toastie pie machine...all on a nice blue table cloth!! Next round, a vase with flowers.

Qualifying was a strange one again. It never seems to be consistent. This round we got 3 laps, one of those under a yellow flag? So no passing first lap, and used the second lap to get some clear track or at least be in less traffic. Third lap I started to go a bit harder. I did have a small rear wheel slip exiting Higgens, but apart from that traction was ok. Was happy with that lap, and thought I'd push a bit harder again on lap four, but got a checkered flag instead. Damn. I thought the lap was clean but not very quick. As it happened, I qualified 2nd!! I wasn't sure how, but was super stoked!! I think it helped that I was a bit calmer (head wise). Now to make good of the front row, and not play silly games like jump starting the lights, or another favourite one of mine, bog second gear.

Gridded up and felt good. Was focused on leaving AFTER the lights, which went well. Was 4th or 5th to turn one and was enjoying the lack of bikes around. Passed Daniel M which surprised me, just to have him pass me back on the front straight. I managed to out brake him though into turn one and stayed in front of him. Then came a great battle with Joel Dykstra. A battle that lasted all 3 of the final laps. I lost count how many times we changed leading each other!! Was really exciting and I couldn't help thinking to myself that this was one of THOSE race battles that could go either way. I was having to push hard to pass Joel back at times, including inside him OVER the patch/bump on the long left hander on the back track. Real grit your teeth stuff at times...AWESOME!! Managed to just stay in front of him at the end and finished in second. Woo Hoo!! My first finish in the top three!! Loved the battle Joel and I had, and to come in 2nd...wow.

Race two warm up lap had a shower of rain in it, which I thought would slow things down a bit, but no one told Sam, Joel or Daniel that. The first lap felt fast and had to work hard not to lose places early on. After the first lap I was in 3rd behind Daniel, with Sam Croft already pulling out and making a nice lead for himself. I was trying to hunt down Daniel, and was tucked behind him comong down the straight to Higgins. I out braked him on the inside, and felt good with my line, but a quarter of the way round lost the front!! Hit the ground pretty hard with my right knee and went for a bit of a slide!! Not sure how Daniel didn't run over the top of me actually. Nice work Daniel. Stopped sliding and looked up to see 3 bikes coming straight for me. Pretty sure (in my mind anyway) that I was the fastest man on the planet and ran to the side of the track. The bike had slide off the track into the gravel which was good.

I walked around for a while trying not to let my knee seize up. Had a look at the bike and while there was some damage, it was no where as bad as I thought it was going to be. It's amazing how many things I thought about while sliding along the track...keep your helmet off the track, how I was a dick for dropping the bike, losing points for the championships, blowing the chance to finish the round in the top 3, telling Chrissie and Craig about how I just dropped their bike (and for the record, they were both AMAZING, which I prob shouldn't be surprised about eh), what my boss was going to say on Monday, what my wife was going to say (who was also awesome about it). All of that in about three seconds. Ha ha.

Went with the Ambo people and got checked out. They were alll great and very thorough. Went and got x rays which all checked out fine, and made sure I got my clearance cert from the doc to get my track license back. Drove home with our team and shared a few beers and had some dinner.

So out of this day I have learnt that I'm surrounded by great people, which I kinda already knew, about having to push hard all the time and that keeping a calm head is a great thing to try and do. Oh, and that it feels great to finish second!!

A big thanks to Craig and Chrissie for being awesome through out the day, and to Sue Futter for checking in on me. Her smile is def contagious. To the ambo staff and the pick up crew that bought my bike back in.

So once the swelling in my knee goes down (it's fatter than my thigh at this point) I'll get out an give the bike a clean and help Craig fix it up again. Then...bring on a two day round next month!! AWESOME

We all loaded up the van and headed up to Feilding for the track day early Friday morning. One way to def get to know your team mates is to all 3 of you sit in the front of a van for 2 hours!! Was good times. Pretty sure I've done my stint in the middle now though and am looking forward to having the window seat next time!! Thanks Chrissie

The track day was great!! Blue sky and no wind. Got a lot of laps in and learnt a whole lot. It's great having Craig around to teach me stuff. Was going a bit faster by the end of the day and felt a lot smoother which was great for the confidence!

Come Sat morning something had been spilt on the track and there was lime EVERYWHERE on pretty much every line. Didn't want it to effect me and went out with a clear head. Came in feeling good and qualified 4th on the grid!! Woo hoo!! Was very happy. Was gagging to get out there for the first race and see what I could piece together from the front row.

Race One

Was obviously very very worked up about getting a good start and trying to get out in front of those speedy Crofts. Jumped the start badly!! Was so pissed off at myself and would have filled a swear jar to the top by the first corner had I had one on my bike. Stayed in the front pack for the race and finished in 4th. EXCEPT...when you jump the start you get a 20 second penalty!!!!! I was gutted because I was happy with how I raced and blew it before I started!!! (Well, technically before anyone else had started!) Ended up dropping to 7th which I was super surprised and stoked about!!!

Race Two

Took a bit to get over the whole jump start thing but vowed not to let it happen again!! Got a better start, but bogged second gear and got passed by plenty of people before turn one. This wasn't part of my plan at all Had a reasonably clear track (read gap between me and the bike in front) up to the last lap when Drew Croft made his presence known on turn one. We had a cool as battle and both did a great pass on each other (well I think so any way), one on Higgins and one on Dunlop. It came down to a drag race which I just managed to win by the smallest of margins!! Finished in 6th! Cool as

Race Three

Got a better start again by my standards for the day, but still not good enough to keep out of the looming traffic. Passed a couple of people and had a never ending battle with a 250 which slowed me down a bit and stopped me from gaining on the guys (150) in front. Finished in 5th. Still very very happy as with that!! But know I can do better...just those pesky starts

Really happy with my results even though I did disappoint myself a bit ( ok, a lot ) with my jump start. Had a great time out there and can't get over how much fun racing is out there. Learning so much every time I go out, and seeming this was my second meet...I stoked!! I've set some goals and have a list of things to work on and think about for next time.

Loved the newly painted bike with it's new decals and all!!! Looks so good guys!! (Chrissie and Craig) Thanks heaps. You guys are fantastic and have given me a great opportunity. Love being around you both, even the ride home was awesome ha ha. Had as much fun then as I did racing which is saying a lot!!

Was cool to see people from last time and have some familiar faces around to talk to instead of wandering around not really knowing anyone like round two. A big thanks to the people who came to watch too!! So cool to have you there, esp. you Bert!! Your the man.

Bring on round four...new laps times...better starts...and just as much fun.

So after a great start on the Saturday I was really looking forward to getting out there again on the Sunday. Woke up at about 5.15 am and it was pissing down with rain!! I was staying at Bert's place (thanks again bro) on the Massey side of Palmerston North, so I was hoping that it wasn't raining at the track. It was!! Got to the track just before 8am and gave the bike a clean and sorted my gear out. It was pretty cold and the track was already wet when it started raining again just after the riders briefing.

I went out in the 'scrub' laps (groups of six bikes all sizes for three laps). I don't think there were any other ss bikes out there, but I can say that wet tires on the 600's and 1000's send water firing out behind them like it was coming out of a water cannon!!!! Lucky they weren't in front of me for long, as I would have got wetter from them than the rain that was coming down. The track was very very wet, but I didn't have any dodgy moments which is what I was looking for by going out. I obviously didn't need to scrub my tires, but wanted to see how slippery it was before race one came around.

I chucked on some good heavy sounds on the i pod and studied my track map again. Craig warmed my bike up and then it was go time. I was still nervous about the start as there was a lot of bike in front of me and it was still very wet. Got a pretty good start but still had a lot of bikes in front. Worked my way past a few people through splash. I really like that part of the track! I was feeling pretty good about the corner speed I taking out of corners, but still not happy with my line on the long left hand sweeper after the hair pin in the back section. I ended up behind a group of bikes just before Splash. I made a plan and went to try it out when two of the bikes slid off the track and I had to do a bit of quick braking and a bit of side stepping to avoid it all. The rest of the race was going really good until Andrew Croft passed me on the very top 90 degree corner in the long track. I had no idea he was there. He had had a huge task in front of him as he had a bad start and ended up last, but worked his way all the way back into 3rd place!! Now that's racing. A huge effort!! I tried to catch him back up but couldn't do it. Ended up coming 4th by 400th of a second! This racing caper is heart breaking sometimes, but losing to a great ride that isn't bad at all. Good work Andrew!! I was a little gutted to just miss out on a third, but very very happy with a 4th. Being able to sort through the traffic and sort my lines is all thanks to Craig Frethey! I'm really looking forward to doing more racing with him around to help as he has a huge amount of knowledge to share and is great to learn from!

Race three was to be on a slightly drier track, but still damp in places. Everyone in frotnt of me got a heaps better start than me and I ended up just staying back out of the 1st corner traffic/chaos and deciding to try and work my way through the pack. This worked quite well and I had a couple of good laps as I caught a few people up. The next time I went round the infield hairpin I saw Andrew C. sitting up on the wall. He was ok but this opened up a chance for me. I looked across the track while going down the middle straight and saw that he others were ahead, but not too far to keep pushing. When I came past on the white flag I could see Ants Singer going around turn one!! I thought that if I pushed hard I might be able to close the gap a bit. By the time we got to the back of the track extension there was only 20 odd metres between us. I had a little chat to myself on the way around the the back hair pin about hanging on and not backing off on the gas at all around the left hand sweeper as it would be my only chance to catch Ants. It was a bit hairy going over the repair patch half way round but managed to stay on and ended up being a gear higher already because of the extra speed I was carrying compared to my other laps. Because of this though it pushed me quiet wide onto the entry of the back straight, which in turn put me a little lower than normal into Dunlop. My heart was going a trillion billion miles an hour by this stage because Ants and I ended up side by side exiting Dunlop and onto the finishing straight. It was a straight out drag to the line and to my surprise, I JUST managed to get in front on the line. I say just because I only beat him by 2 tenths of a second!! I was so happy and there was quiet a lot of yelling going on in my helmet!! That was awesome!! I was so stoked. My last lap was the fastest for the ss class (but Sam Croft had backed off a bit, but still, I'll take what I can get). I had finished in 4th again and couldn't have asked for a better week end out! I then got told that I had come 3rd overall in the ss class for the weekend!! YAHOO!!!! Holy cow!!! That was the icing on the cake for sure. I never thought that the weekend could have gone so well. So I got to stay for prize giving ( in the freezing cold with about 11 other freezing people) and got a certificate and frame to put it in.

Now that's going straight to the pool room!!

This week end could not have been any better for our team! I owe everything I experienced over the three days to Chrissie and Craig!! Thanks heaps!! And a big thanks to all the people in our pit garage that stood out there and cheered me on and helped out over the week end, and to all of the others that were there for me too!!

How many sleeps till next round!?!

So I'm not sure where to begin, but here we go...

We (Craig, Dave from Hi-Torque, Chrissie and myself) pulled the bike apart a few weeks ago. Completely stripped!! I was a little concerned to be honest when we loaded it all into the van at the end of the day in a couple of fish bins and a bare frame. Especially cause of our time frame. We weren't going to make round one, but round two was a definite. Craig and I had a few sessions in the shed at Chrissie's place putting it all back together after hours of sanding the frame and swing arm ready for painting. Craig did the hard yards and got the majority of it together and then I got the text I'd been waiting for... the bike goes!! AWESOME!!

I met Craig at Chrissie's place early Friday morning as we wanted to try our luck with the weather for the practise day. Esp seeming I hadn't ridden the bike at all yet. Got to Chrissie's just after 6am, Chrissie must have already gone to work or something as I didn't see her. :shifty: Craig and I drove up to Feilding through the rain, but it stopped before we got there. Track was quiet wet, but to me it just looked beautiful:yes: There were only a few other bike there at that point and they were putting on tire warmers and all that flash stuff, so we got about 7 odd laps in our own!! MANFEILD...ON MY OWN!!! ARE YOU SERIOUS!!! So sweet.

So did a few slow laps. Took a couple just to get over the whole "I'm at Manfeild" buzz (which hasn't gone away really) . Came in and checked over a couple of things, then went back out. Defining moment number one... exiting the infeild hair pin and thinking, I'll rev it out a bit a see what it's like. Well bugger me... Got to 9000 rpm and it started pulling like a school boy!!! Holy sh#t I said to myself, grinning from ear to ear! Oh yeah, this is going to be good!! We got close to 30 laps in over the day, and thanks to Craig, who is a great teacher, we improved through out the day. My lap times started at 1.59 and I managed to knock a few seconds off every lap we went out on. By the end of the day we got it down to 1.38. Pretty happy with that really, actually, very happy cause it was my first time on the bike AND at Manfeild. Bike ran great. It never missed a beat, which was a relief cause we were 100% sure how it would go. Bring on a race day!!

Got to the track early Sat morning, but not as early as some as the were HEAPS of people there!! Was trying to soak it all in. I was having a great time already and we hadn't even got out the van yet! We unloaded into our pit garage and went for a drive around the long track, as we only had the short track the day before. Flat, with a couple of tight corners thrown in, but some awesome looking sweeping corners too. Signed in and got my transponder. Went out for my practise laps. The extension to make it a long track was so sweet to ride! Definite good times ahead around there for sure. Came in pretty happy and then got told I qualified 11th out of 20. QUALIFY??? I thought it was just a practise session?!My lap time was 2.52. Very happy with my position though, again, cause it;s my first time out. Fuelled up and sorted stuff, then went and watched the 600's start and how the start lights all worked. Was feeling a little nervous about the start, as I wasn't sure how I'd go. The start ended up being the longest start EVER, and we sat on the grid for ages while something got sorted and a few people moved around. Thought I jumped the start and pulled the clutch back in, but then of course the lights went out and I thought I'd cocked it up. Can't really remember the take off (prob cause it was so fast, HA) but took quiet a tight inside line into turn one as there was a HUGE amount of room?!? Counted my blessings and tried to settle down, as that was the bit that I was worried about over, the start and turn one. Just the whole race left to go!!

Passed a few people and felt good going at the pace I was at. Wasn't sure where I was in the field, was just concentrating on who ever was in front of me...and catching them. This is wicked, wicked fun I thought. It felt like I was going a lot faster than the day before, but was hard to tell because of the track extension and having people around too. Came in puffing!! But smiling cause that was was serious goodness right there!!! Wow wee. Craig cradled up the bike and I kinda just stood there...grinning! Got my time sheet back and I had come 5th!! Holy cow?! My fastest lap time was 2.30. I'm not sure how many times I can say it, but I was pretty happy to say the least. Some would say F-ing stoked!!

We packed our things up, and had a wonder around. They announced that there was going to be another race, but it had started raining quiet hard and we'd already packed up, so we gave it a miss. Cause guess what?...We get to do it all again tomorrow!!! SOOOO AWESOME!!!!

Thanks a whole buch to Chrissie Whitfeild @ WF Photography and Craig Frethey for putting this ride together. You guys are fantastic and so easy to be around!! I can't say thanks enough, but I'll keep saying it anyway!! THANKS HEAPS.

Bring on Sunday!!

Found that soaking the pieces of f/glass in the resin got the best results, but only two or three at a time otherwise it goes all goopy and weird. Still, pretty good for a first go. Used 4/5ths of a half litre bottle of resin for two and a half layers of the seat. Used more than I thought, but as long as it works then I don't mind. Did see an ad for the pre made tails for fxr's today for $140 bucks. Wonder if I should get one of those and just make my fairings? Pretty cool making it yourself though, just have to be more accurate with the final mould.

Late 90's KR150 frame, being cut down for weight and new shaping. Has standard forks and rims (18"rear & 16" front), but will look to put 17" rims on. 15 month old Loncin 150 engine to be transplanted. Racing CDI unit but to be later replaced with home made (by Bert) programable unit. Standard KR rear brake caliper, with front to be sourced. Home made fairings and seat/cone. Home made hangers with standard gearing, not race shift. Colour yellow and called Nanook (after the Eskimo in Frank Zappa's yellow snow fame).

At this point I have

-Cut half the sub frame off and knead it'd the cut tube ends. More to come off as I get braver
-Cut the cradle off from the front but have left the base in to help with engine mounting, then will remove completely
-Made a mould for seat/cone from chicken wire, covered with gaffer tape and first layer of f/glass on
-Cut extra tube from clip on bars so they slide down forks
-Cut out standard top engine mount (cracked) and ground back welds

Not sure I have the patience to type the list of things needed to be done, let's put it down as 'lots'
So the KL (Kawasaki Lochin) project begins. I am yet to give it a real name, we'll see what it turns into.

A small () list of things needed/to do so far. List will need to be updated as I go.

-An engine Have got a Lochin 150 lined up for early next year from Nigel.
-Front brake set up. One piston set up complete for around $50 from Newmans. I'll keep an eye out for a two piston caliper though.
-New front and rear disks
-Cut the rear piping off the sub frame. Can be shortened by around 150mm.
-Plastic fuel tank
-Fiberglass cover for over tank and engine head
-New tires. Have a 17'' front, but 18'' rear, so might look for a 17'' for the rear too.
-Make a new seat. Maybe a one piece tank cover and seat made from fibre glass and fastened with bonnet clips for quick access

There are a lot of lugs and mounts that aren't needed, but will build it up to a rolling frame first before cutting stuff off. Engine mounts will have to be shited, but can't see any major problems at this point.

Good times ahead

So after Bert and I had a minor brake issue in the enduro, but Mumford Luck would have it that they are now better than ever!!! It would seem that because the caliper is different to the forks, and I've made a new mount to join them together, that when the caliper is mounted in it's new position, there is a spot for an air bubble to sit somewhere inside. I've be struggling with spongy front brakes for ages. I've always bled them while attached to the forks, creating the problem. We had the brakes off while fitting the brake pad back in, and dislodged the bubble, creating epic front brake pressure. AWESOME!!!!!

Sooooo... Now I want better back brakes too. To do this, I've pulled the brake lever and foot peg off an FZR400 along with the hanger. I've cut apart the hanger I made last week and will use it as a template for the new one that will hold the new brake mechanism. I want to make the rear drum cable operated (thanks for the idea Bert!). I'm going to get a mountain bike front brake cable and adapt it go the FZR lingage.

I'm also picking up another swing arm from Skunk from his old AX. It has had an extra bar welded around it to hold a mono shock. I won't do this (yet) but will instead use the extra bar to run the new brake cable down.

I ran 96 octane gas in the bike on Sunday too at 30:1 and it ran so sweet. So much better than 91 octane.

All systems are go. 27 days to prepare for slipway!!

I have had a pretty productive day in the shed, albeit with 3 jerseys and a beanie on to beat the cold.

I had a session on the airbox on friday night. I cut it in half, then cut the filter holder off, and put a gauze over it. I Cut a cover for the gauze, gave it a lick off paint and made a new hanger for it. Kinda looks like it has a heart now, Iron man styles!!

I've been looking a making some new foot peg hangers for a while, but wanted to incorporate a new set up for the rear brake, which are sloppy and ineffective at best. I found some 5mm ali and made new hangers in a similar shape to the last ones, but mounted the new pegs back about 15mm. I made a brake lever out of the same sized ali and made it pivot through the foot peg bolt. I cut the existing brake arm down to fit. Now the brake actions from above the swing arm instead of below.

I'm going to need a new rear wheel as the slop in between the sprocket and the hub is pretty bad now. The drums on the rear brake need looking at too, but I think when I open it up it's going to be a replace job, not a fix up job!

I pulled the front brake lever off and put a small brass bolt in to help push the top piston a bit further when the lever is pulled. This worked a treat!!!...until I noticed a drip of fluid from under the calipers. So the bolt worked as I needed, but I'm obviously losing pressure from one or both of the seals around the caliper pistons. It will work but will need topping up after a few races till I sort it out properly.

So a good few hours! Just got to thread the new brake arm and fit it to the new lever and I'm back on the track, hopefully a bit better off.
