Problems with the charging system on the Triumph Daytona 955i and Speed Triples 2002 onwards.
I ended up after 3 weeks of owning my bike (with 9000kms) that the rectifier shit itself. Luckily I brought the bike from a shop who then replaced (FOC) with a new rectifier and battery as that was also toast.
Once my bike was back from the shop it was happily starting with no issues…Until winter set in!!!
I hadn’t been told about having to cold start the bike (ie prime it). So Every morning when it was cold I found I would literally drain the battery and my little orange light would come on and stay on till battery was charged above the threshold and x number of restarts to clear the fault.
This really pissed me off!!!! So did some research on the www and have found the issue and the solution.
There is a 30amp fuse (no2 Ignition Switch) that is in series with another 30amp fuse (no3 Main).
This makes no sense.
I wanted to keep the existing wiring just in case…..
So here is what I did:
1. Unplugged the 4 pin connector on the rectifier. Not the 3 pin connector. See before mod.pdf
2. Made a wiring loom that consists of: x1 30amp inline fuse holder (it comes with wire either end), x2 - 12 (awg) gauge wire that is joined to the inline fuse holder and added a crimp to the fuse holder so that it can be attached to the battery.
3. Repeated step 2 but no inline fuse as this is for the earth.
4. Connected the Positive and Earth wires to the rectifier 4 pin connector (2 for positive and 2 for earth)
5. Hooked up the positive wire (inline fuse side without fuse in it!!!!!!!) to the battery +.
6. Hooked the Earth wire to the battery -.
7. Then removed fuse 2 (30amp) from the fuse block and placed into the fuse holder.
Here are the results:
Before modification: 13.8volts idle, 13.2 volts @ 4000rpm
After modification: 14.5 volts idle, 14.4 volts @ 4000rpm
Now I will be able to run heated hand-grips etc without fear off the battery going flat!!!!
