2009 - The Year In Retrospect

This has been a most unusual year, it seems to have gone so fast and yet so much has happened, the weather has been pretty crappy for riding and yet I have still managed to do 25,000Kms, I seem to be just plodding along at work and yet we’ve bought out our business partner and bought a rental property….or at least the bank did!!
The highlights as far as rides go would have to be doing my first Southern Cross, but more particularly, the day Steve and I rode from Cape Reinga to Wellington in under 12 hours and the fact that on the same ride we managed to do day-rides the full length of both islands. As an overall event though, the Mini’s Return last year was a more memorable ride as I managed to squeeze in more ‘great’ roads over a similar distance.
Following that, the best rides would be when Steve and I did a 1200+Km day taking in the ride around Kawhia Harbour and the Awakino Gorge, even if it did get down to a rather uncomfortable -7°C on the Desert Road that morning. Then there was the annual Grand Challenge, MDA (Muscular Dystrophy) and C1KC (Capital 1000Km Cruise) rides as well as taking Nasty over the Forgotten Highway to place a cross where Grub died on last years C1KC.
I guess the ACC Protest ride on 17 November rates as a memorable event as well, just because of the sheer scale of the event.
From a personal perspective, we enjoyed another great trip to the Australian Tennis Open, followed immediately by my neice, Eboni’s wedding. We had another trip to the Gold Coast, catching-up with family I hadn’t seen for about 5 years, then my daughter and Grand-daughter have moved back to Wellington and are now living just down the road.
I’ve enjoyed another year whereby I have managed to remain upright and I feel my riding and confidence in the bike continue to improve. I am equally happy to putter along within the allowable limits, or have a good fang and fortunately I have some great mates with which I can share and continue to enjoy the delights of a good ride.
I guess there must have been a few lowlights but they elude me at this time….roll on 2010!
