Heads Up and Enjoy
Today, 26 June 2007 the video arrived and I offer the following supporting comments:
This video was developed by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau. The theme is avoiding harm and is presented covering three key elements referred to as the Skills Triangle:
1. Bike control skills
2. Mental skills to recognize potential harm, and
3. Self-control skills.
To quote from the accompanying booklet:
“Although due care and skill have been used in the production of this booklet, it has been produced primarily for educational and informational purposes only and is not intended to be, and should not be relied upon as, a substitute for professional training.”
My General Comment
The video is a very good production and within the graduated motorcycle licence system here in New Zealand, I would consider this video and all three topics to be very useful for the Restricted licence holder prior sitting the Full licence test.
The second and third topics provide very good reinforcement, and in conjunction with a professionally conducted advanced riding course this video would be very beneficial for all riders when reviewing their riding, mental, and self-control skills.
My Conclusion
When next in a potentially harmful situation, one that puts that tightness in the stomach, and you are successful in coming through the incident unscathed, ask yourself how and why the harmful situation occurred. Be self-critical, what was it you may have been remiss in, could you have prepared and or reacted in a different manner.
The DVD is good value at AUD $20 and arrived within a week.
