CB500RS the Creation

Rate this Entry
Well' I have been meaning to start this for a while now and it was the Aero that got my arse into gear to get this one sorted....

For a while now I have had an CB250RS stuck away in the back of the shed to use as a project base,so all parts not needed have been or are on Trademe and as a result I have already recouped the amount I paid for the bike..................

First thing I decided was that I want a old school style with some modern twists

The suspension

first the front out with the old amd in with the not so old which is in actual fact CBR250R(MC19) front forks, triple clamps and single 2 pot caliper,I change the bottom bearing collor on the steem for it all to fit.....
The rear shocks are from a GS550 and will be replace with new hagons further down the track

The wheels

They are both now 17" although I have been told I shoud've just use mags it would off been cheaper, they just were'nt in the plan and just wouldn't suit the chassis and styling of the bike and certainly wouldn't give me the look I am after

So for the rear I found a 3x17" rim last year which needed some mods done to the spoke angles to house the original rear drum brake hub

and for the front wheel I found that was on a XR complete with rotor even though the rotor will be sold and replace as I need to find a 4 holed offset 300mm disc and centrlise the front wheel on the axle so still lots of work too do the the basis is there......

Tyres are 130/70/17 rear and 110/70/17 front

Headlight is of a GS550 I just love those 8 inch lights and works well with the GB instruments I have

In the last couple of months I have been able to fine a GB500 motor complete with wiring loom and carb and just last week I got the header pipes which will have the collector box cut out and pipes spread and extened to run 2 megaphone mufflers under what use too be the pillon peg mounting points....

Although I need to make up some new engine mounting plates and spacers I dont need to change the mounting points on the frame to fit the engine but I do need to change the mounting points on the frame for the fuel tank and lift it off the top of the engine which is alot easier

and just the other day the risers arrived,I think they look pretty sharp and the missus reconds they look like giant zippo's

I still need to sort out the rear end but that only a matter of weilding in some new tail section mounting brakets to accomadate the new tail section and new tail lighting set up

So here are some photos of where I started and where I am up too

    Is that you Barry?

If i'd known you were on KB I would have charged you double for the motor, then held out an screwed you over for the carb and electrics.

However your rebuild is fine looking and stick to your guns re.wire spoked wheels...they always look better.
    Lookn forward to more up-dates.

... to the '80s, when I inherited a mutant 'XBR500RS', which needed some TLC. I don;t know the provenance of the bike, but my brother-in-law (a non-biker) gave it to me in exchange for painting his roof and fitting some guttering. It had a CB250RS frame and running gear, an XR500 engine, and Cycleworks megaphones. I stripped it completely, repainted everyhing (including the engine), fitted a new chain, sprockets and tyres, had the head fixed for free (had a leaking inlet valve), and spent some time mucking around with jetting before it ran more or less OK.
Unlike yours, the tank had been "cut and shut" to clear the head.

The bike was a bit of a mongrel, but one of the most fun bikes I've owned.

All the best with your version, Sir!

Well the seat unit arrived today so I have most of the parts too complete the rolling chassis just need to sort out the megaphone mufflers ,front brake rotor, front wheel spacers and front master cylinder.......so almost there before its striped down for painting rewiring and engine rebuild......

I do need to make up a new rear end to fit the seat unit however......Al though its been 25years since I handled a weilder I will get it done properly considering it will all be visible when the bike is completed, but saying that the missus has given me the go ahead to head down too the local Tradezone store and pick one out

Today I got the new carb for the 500,Whats wrong with the other one nothing really its just dated and as I am bring the bike's technology forward a couple of decades I have replaced the orignal carb with a CRF450 carb......

Considering there will be work done to the camshaft, valves, exhaust system and crank it only makes sense too look after the otherside of the motor..

So I am about half way through the total rebuild, but very close too getting the rolling chassis finished before I strip it all down for Painting and engine rebuild to start.

I must admit its rather cool seeing the bike actually looking like a bike now as all the parts come together

Well since the last entry I have rebuilt another bike and made some changes too this one.....Pics will follow soon enough once new parts arrive from overseas

Finally finding a front disc I was happy with (A 320 wave),Changed the MC19 caliper for a XR650 caliper and using a XR650 master cylinder, the front end is almost complete as in terms of how it will look, but I have Changed the drag bars for some clubman Bars, have ditched the 8" headlight for a 7" and ditched the GB instruments for a single Digital all in one 70mm unit along with sensors to plug into the old skool speedo fitting,
I was going to use CBR250 switchblocks but have now settled on using a set of Triumph Daytona switch blocks, which keeps inline with modernising the bike but still keeping that old skool style/look about it..

After settling on the speedo I wanted,I have decided to install a fuel gauge sender in the tank as for the tank too fit around the GB motor it needs to be widen so its perfect timing really,

The tail piece I got I have decided not too use it,but instead use the orignal seat base and build the tail peice from that, It will save mucking around with the frame too much and decided I didn't want a rear fender anyway....
