Pic 3 would have been my choice of this set had it not been ruined by photoshopping - blur is out of control - grass is not natural colour - mixing B&W with colour is tacky.

Pic 7 has the most creative use of depth of field.

Pic 8 could have been a winner with a better angle for the bike and less DoF to make it pop.

On the surface your anaylise of three is pretty spot on. However where three, in my opinion, comes into its own is that there is so much wrong that it works. The grass is crass but this adds to the savage background. it provides just enough contrast to the background and at the same time bring into focus the helmut which under normal photograpic 'rules' may not be noticed.

The grey tones of the bike stand out with the grey tones of the back ground and this adds to the effect of the image. It is a powefull photo that says what is intended in a blunt and brutal manner. It's an eye catcher and that is what sets this photo apart from the others............in my opinion.

Fair enough. I'd love to see the original as I think the composition would lend itself to the whole shot being black and white and using some contrast and subtle burning in of the bike instead. I think that would bring out the agressive stance of the bike in a much more powerful way.

number 6 is by far the best.

    All I have done is:

    1. Converted to greyscale.
    2. Adjust curves to bring out the black of the bike.
    3. Removed power pole/lines and replaced with grey sky (because it was washed out this looks a little crap)
    4. Dodged the dark trees on the right to help them fade into the background.

EDIT: Haha there's one major mistake in the burning in of the sky. See if anyone can find it

    We have a winner

I left it unfixed as an example that photography is often about what you miss
