Agreed, the majority of young people (myself included sometimes) dont believe the rules apply to them. However i like to think i am a lot more level headed than the likes of my wanky friends who drive their daddys Lexus/Merc/BMW frequently at 200+ kmph.
The road sense thing is a good point, and im just trying to bring in a different angle here. A lot of my mates have bugger all road sense and dont know shit about how to actually drive fast. But their car has ABS brakes and the side curtain air bags, so they think they are 'all sweet bro'. The kids i am talking about are the 'rich kids', they dont care! Out of my mates, one has had a Drink driving charge, two have lost their lisence on demerits, and one on the spot who got dangerous driving for excessive speed. The worst was a friend, or i'd like to call him an associate, who knocked a man off his bicycle on East Coast Road toward Silverdale. All mentioned above are 16-17
They have no idea how vulnerable they really are or how much danger they put themselves or their passengers or other road users in.

Anyway my rant over. The idea i wanted to raise was this. I am 16 and i can see getting your lisence at 15 is waaaaay to young for most. However i think, and this is my opinion only, being given a lisence to ride a 50cc scooter at 15 could do some good. As you said it would teach respect of the road, other vehicles and themselves. But most of all hopefully some may realise having a lisence is a privilidge, not a right. A problem that those on that Sunday doco failed to realise

Yeah, good points James - most of us start out being invincible.

I think the key difference between my generation and yours was that the rich kids drove Escorts wiht about 60 rwhp - nowadays, you can buy a WRX for beer money...

You're a level headed young guy, you have a hell of a future ahead of you. Bling on its way.

Good point made, I mean I fall into that age group (18-25) and sometimes you do feel invincible, but most of the time I feel exposed!

I know what my machine (read, not me) can do, and that scares the shit out of me lol!

Well said James, imagine when daddies merc is up for crushing, maybe then the law will get through to these tossers.Yep we did similar stuff,i.e ripping up grass verges on country roads, drinking but one guy never drank so we had sober driver.

But then the ol escort or cortinas weren't more than 100hp,lucky to have power steering, only airbag was girls in the car.Still we thought we were 10' tall and bullet proof.Think we did more damage(no major)to our cars rather than the parents ones, especially once we were working and could buy our own.

A fine line between fun and deliberate vandalism, used to have a mall in Hawera, one Friday night a mates dad said between 6.30-8.30pm one car in our group went passed 45 times,so that would be bad news now, although no major stereo or exhaust noise, think he managed to put 100km on speedo tripmeter that night around town.

BOY RACERS - have I discovered the truth?
    ________________________________________
Boy Racers – much has been said about these youths, however after much thought I have come to the conclusion that they may all have closet homosexual tendencies – whether they be aware of it or not.

I do not proclaim to be an expert on these matters, indeed I know very little of the homosexuals world other than what I have seen on TV, however I have listened to the occasional Wham song.

I would ask you to consider the following points and welcome your comments:

    1. BR’s tend to meet in groups in poorly lit car-parks, street corners etc. Have these areas become the new ‘men’s toilets’?

    2. Once more than two BR’s gather in these dark areas they immediately open their bonnets. I believe this opening of the bonnet has a phallic link – they are effectively saying to other BR’s ‘look at me, I’m erect and open to inspection’

    3. After a BR opens his bonnet, he is often seen making a display of his buttocks by bending over the engine bay. Low-slung jeans and boxers have become part of the BR dress code to aid the display of butt crack. The displaying of buttocks in this manner is a widely accepted part of the matting ritual in the animal world; in this case they attract additional male BR’s.

    4. Large bore exhausts – there’s fairly obvious anal links here with such a large noisy hole being at the rear of the vehicle. Again these are proudly displayed for following BR’s to see.

    5. Tinted windows – I have often noticed numerous BR’s getting into a single vehicle. Just what goes on in these cars when the doors are closed?

    6. Caps on backwards. WTF is it with this look - it cannot be a fashion statement, as it looks stupid, so I conclude it must be functional. This stumped me for some time until it dawned on me that you could not give a decent blowjob wearing a cap with the peak forward. Reverse the peak and…well…’bobs’ your uncle.

    7. Finally, and quite conclusively I believe, if I sit at the lights in my little 1500cc car next to a BR and start to rev up my engine they usually respond by giving me a ‘wanking’ type of sign with their hands. Now I understand that despite being considerably older than the average BR, I am an attractive example of maleness – obviously these young BR’s think so as they make their desires to preform a lewd act on me clear with their gesturing.

Residents barricade in boyracers, call police Article

"We are sick of the destruction and menace ... We want to create a real deterrent and the residents are going to do their utmost to discourage it and call police."

He said the history of offenders should be available to lending institutions.

Senior Sergeant Ian Campion, of road policing, said the residents were "perfectly justified" in barricading in the racers.

"To be perfectly honest, I don't blame residents for taking that kind of action," he said.

Mr Campion said while the residents were technically obstructing a roadway by blocking off the cul-de-sac, in the circumstances police would not take any action against them.

He believed that anyone who took a drunk driver off the road was doing a good thing.

"They prevented a drunk driver from continuing driving and putting everybody else at risk. In that case their actions are to be applauded," Mr Campion said.

2-3 boy racers killed on the sidelines of impromptu drag races that I can recall in the last ten years (wish the number was higher...)
5 boy racers killed on east coast road, lost control at over 200 kph
2 minutes further up the road, young woma lost control of her new WRX, she died, along with a passenger from memory...
No outsiders hurt, but 4 out of 5 in a car were killed in Hastings a couple of years back. Doing 140+kph in a 50kph residential street. They weren't even racing another car. Hit a tree, when the driver swerved to avoid a car turning out of a side street.
Moral of the story? Get them on their own, cos then they are vulnerable...
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Can't have boyracing without racing, just as we can't have manslaughter without man's laughter.

After a quick flick over the replies placed i can't see a comment that points the FINGER at our own goverment for allowing import cars into the country that drove the prices down that low and worse of all CREDIT CONTROL being that bloody hopless these kids could buy a $15000 - $30000 car for only $1 deposit. Ask your self people who gave it to these kids on a PLATE. Don't get me wrong, what these shits are upto isn't good but i dont put all the blame on them, after all if imports were not introduced 20yrs ago and credit control was alot tighter 70% of these kids wouldn't have these CARS!!!!!!!!!

Okey dokey, so there's a problem with young 'uns being stoopid in their veehickles. My problem is the over-reaction and demonising of what is a minor problem in the scale of things.

If you walk up to someone with a gun and blow their head off, you don't have your car impounded.

If you beat up an old guy outside a bowling club your car isn't crushed.

If you break into an old lady's house and rape her in her own bed you don't have any property confiscated and sold off.

Young violent offender? A good hard dose of community service will make you see the error of your ways (tui)

Pushing drugs? Home detention will do for you, son. What's that? you wanna keep working and making money? Sure, no problem.

Sure hoons are a pain in the arse and present a danger to themselves and others but there are far worse problems in our society/judicial approach that warrant more urgent attention. By and large we are just puppets dancing on the end of the media's strings. Here we are getting all wound up about the latest sensationalised headlines while the mishandling and ignorance of the bigger issues continues unabated.
