Oh no another wet weather gear thread

I have tried a couple of times now to re proof my Orina jacket, but i think that it has simply worn out...

I was keen on some new DriRider, but comments here seem less than favourable. What I would like is some Hein Greicke,. but no one seems to import it - what about the Teknic gear?

I am after

Waterproof
Some body armour
abrasion resistant
removable liner

For semi daily commuting and occasional touring. While I am at it I might replace the Dririder Nordic pants to get it all matching...

ANd I dont mind paying some $$$ for some quality - what should I get?

Assukming your not track racing, I would try and get a two piece that can zip together.

I got a technik jacket had armour in elbows n shoulders,and back protector,and removeable liner.MOTORAD did not have my size but had it before 10 the next morning.I like my jackets a little longer so its a freeway.Lots of pockets,vents and adjustments for size.Have been caught in one heavy downppour but only short ride.

I don't know why but Dririder quality goes up with the $$$. Other brands seem to have a basic shell that has more features as you go up the range but the basic quality remains.

The Summit, Nordic and Rallycross are the ones to go for but at $400 + you get into a part of the market where you have heaps of choice.

FWIW my Nordic started to leak halfway into a 10 hour trip in constant rain. The collar and cuffs gave way but with the lining in I stayed warm until I hit my destination. It was 10 degrees or less for the whole trip. By next morning it had dried completely.

These jackets are supposed to do the job quite nicely, I'm looking at getting one myself. The guy who sells gear at Cycletreads rated these highly, said he sells a shitload and no one has ever complained. He also told me that to spend an extra $200 on a jacket like this (eg. Dririder) is not worth it, you get more bang per buck with the Mugello (made by Neo). The pants are cheap too.

Tried a jacket on and it was really warm and comfortable. Much warmer than my leather jacket I use at the moment!


Oh, the guys from Holeshot reckon they're really good aswell, he wears the jacket and pants everyday and never gets wet (unless he's riding for hours non-stop in the rain).

I got some Hein Gericke from sierratradingpost.com A lot of it was run-out and may not have your sizes. I haven't tested it in a bin so I can't rate abrasion / tear resistance for you.

For short commuting it has been dry and warm and meets your requirements re armour, liner. Jacket cost was about NZD$120 landed from memory. I might regret a cheap jacket if / when I come off.

PS: The stuff I've got is made in indonesia, but no zip problems, unravelling thread etc... after nearly 1 year of 5 days per week use.

Before i got my leathers, i was on the prowl for tuff adn visible waterproof stuff for bikers. Alas, there seems to be none had on a budget.

Did some shopping around, here is what i got up to for a jacket:

1000D (yup ONE THOUSAND D) cordura material, PU backed so waterproof
$50-$100
Armoured MX jersey, or CE plastic armour
$70-$100
Thermal insulated material for liner
$40
Labour for tailoring etc
$100-$200

Heres a solution that can compare $$$-wise, and ?possibly? better safety-wise to branded cordura that is semi-waterproof...Whaddyathink...?

Fortunately i didnt have to worry cos i fell to the allure of a black dead-cow-jacket...

Alpinestars Drystar gear or even better the Goretex gear!
Ive had my Alpinestars RK-5 Jacket for 3 years now without one single drop leaking through.
Not even the typical wet belly in heavy (and I mean heavy!) rain.

Trust me mate, If you want a garrantee of waterproofness....

ALSO!!! I have ridden for a good 8 hours in HEAVY rain and still stayed warm and dry! So will hold up in any weather with ease.
Just ask some people who have bought it on here.

It really is good stuff.
