Bad news about the redundancy but good to get something to fill in so soon afterwards. Wish my story was as good!

Work this year has been very slow - in December I invoiced about double what I used to earn when working fulltime but since February it's been averaging $200 - a MONTH! Yeah, so the savings have been taking a real hit.

I applied for a job last month as a casual advertising writer for a newspaper I used to work for as a photographer many years ago. In those days it was a daily with six reporters and two photographers, but now it is a twice-weekly free paper with two reporters only. I was interviewed on May 27 and told I was the top candidate, and they called on June 2 and said the job was mine if I wanted it. I accepted and called in the following day to collect tax forms, etc to fill in. I was also introduced to the people I'd be working with. I was told my start date was the 10th. The manager asked me to drop the forms off to her on Thursday between 10am and 2pm but at 9.30am that day I got a call from her that went like this:

"I'm really, really sorry, but I've been told there's no money in the budget to employ someone here and in Kapiti, so there's not much point you coming in this morning. I've been arguing to keep the two positions [the job was previously done by one person who commuted between the two papers but it was costing too much in travelling expenses so they decided to split it] but they want the reporters to do the job locally."

So I went from being thrilled and excited about having at least SOME income every week to pissed off and depressed in two days. To top it all off, I finished my tax return the day I got the job and found I owe IRD nearly $650!
Yes, I am pedantic about spelling and grammar so get used to it!
