Am lookin to head out with eldest daughter for a spot of fushin in the next hour or so. Had a quick blast last night (Porirua channel at the domain) but there was nothing but spotty taking chunks out of the bait. Anyone know of anywhere, within easy into the night walkin, where I can hit some "deep" water from a relatively stable platform? Considering anywhere near Porirua - Pukerua or other "easy" access.
    I didn't think!!! I experimented!!!

Well, I got two rainbow trout on the way home on Friday night - one was a bit small, may have been legal - but I put it back ... the other was delicious ...

Nice... I ended up with an Eel and an Eagle Ray. At least the Eagle Ray tested out the gear and my aging frame and both passed well indeed. Also something severed my line above the rig leaving about 8 inches of serrated line... the rod didn't twitch and the reel (free spooling) didn't click. Been feckin around making all sorts of rigs to test out, hooked just about every finger and have a few gashes on the outside of the knuckles that tension the knots, but t'was to be expected given my lovely soft skin.

    I needs new fushun grounds.

    Try Moa Point,

I have spearfished off there in the past and there are quite a few Blue Moki that come into that little bay by the ramp. Probably best to use a strayline with low drag and see what you get. Paua are plentiful past the 8m mark if you plan on doing some freediving. Theres a facebook group called NZ Surfcasting, heaps of spots and tips posted up everyday. I haven't idiot sticked in a while but I used to really enjoy it.

One peice of advice I can offer is that current is a good thing, and where there are fish, there are fish.

Good on yah for getting your daughter out there too

Well the eel is in the freezer, but I put the ray back. Having said that, I do love trout.

I've caught and eaten Ray ... they tell me it's an acquired taste ... that's as may be ... I have no wish to acquire a taste for it ..
