Leather jacket warm enough?

So i just got a job and would like to commute to work but i need some gear. Currently using a dri rider jacket that is big, bulky, warm but also borrowed. Im thinking leather would be better for protection and wouldn't be so hot in the summer. But how are leather jackets for warmth in the winter? I will be riding with work shirt and thermal shirt underneath and would have to get a rain jacket over the top. It's a 20 minute ride with 90% of it being in 100 and 80 zones and its obviously pretty cold at 6:30 in the morning

I should probably get some pants as well but i think getting a jacket into my locker is going to be hard enough

for commuting I would be looking at a more sexy textile jacket. they are perfect for that kind of use. Leather is too hot when its hot, and not warm enough when its cold.

When it comes to summer i fear the cordura would be a little too hot and i really don't want to have to buy another jacket. Also i am worried the cordura won't fit in my locker I also like the fact leather can be repaired and looks a lot better

I had textiles and then i came off and now i have leather, enough sed as to how well the textiles hold up and how well they protect id never buy the textiles again

Like ventilation and liners and suchlike.
My first leather jacket was one of those old-fashioned double-breasted ones, with a silk lining. In them daze, with no fairing, it wasn't warm enough, so I got my mum to replace the lining with a fluffy one (fake sheepskin).
My second one was way too big, so I could fit multiple garments under it (which I needed to in Christchurch).
My Teknic jacket morphed into a textile jacket with leather bits where it counted. It had a thermal liner, room for multiple layers underneath, and had 8 ventilation zips. Apart from the leatherised sleeves on the bits where there wasn't a zip, it was OK in summer.
My current leather jacket is about as close as you can get to a 4-season leather jacket. It has a thermal liner, and a waterproof liner, which between them keep out most of the wind'n'rain'cold. There's not much room underneath, so I wear two or three layers of thinnish merino.
In winter, the front zips off, and the zips on the sleeves can be opened, to reveal mesh underneath. Very kewl.

However (but!) I wouldn't recommend this particular jacket: it was VERY expensive, and I don't think it will prove to be very durable. It's fine now, after 18 months of daily use (and some replacement velcro bits and a repaired seam), but eventually, the clever waterproof zips will fail, and the jacket will be buggered.

Ideally, a biker would have either a hybrid jacket like my bastardised Teknic, or they'd have (even better), a summer leather jacket and pants with perforated bits to let air through, a winter jacket and pants that were warm, a waterproof overjacket and pants, and a one-piece suit for track days.

Hey mate, I have a 1 Tonne Cordura Jacket selling as I have too many jackets!...used twice I got for $140... has a removable lining for warmth...Its Red, small (although would suit small or medium) am in Tauranga.... let ya have it for $80 if ya want it.... Its that exact red one you have mentioned above....absolutely mint condition....

Hi.
At this time of year, you would freeze your butt off if you purchased the Leather Race Chequer Jacket as it has perforated leather. The Red cordura jacket would be the way to go as it is very warm and in the summer you just open up all of the 6 air vents. Check out our website for prices cheaper than trademe.

Yep i was interested in that as I asked about it in the thread you were selling it in. I just have a feeling that it might be a bit small. I guess if i do buy it i can sell it for what the same price if it doesnt fit. I will try and make a decision about your jacket fairly soon!

If the zip is metal or strong plastic try this.. open up the jacket and run a candle across the teeth and then zip the jacket up.

Works for dry suits when diving a treat.

My thoughts, leather looks good dry but is a pain in arse wet, and takes for ever to dry.

Both gloves are as warm as eachother. The leather ones are better in a crash but they can soak up water while the cordura ones don't soak up water. The cordura gloves also have suade leather palms for extra protection. Be quick as we are running out of these very quick.
We also have the Waterproof Ballistics jacket for $270.00. To find a waterproof leather jacket form the bike shops you would pay at a minimum around $700. It still soaks up water though. This is another jacket to consider.
