Only a recent form - they have always formerly been the Church of Latter day Saints
Was Joseph Smith wrong then?
He refused to be called Christian, and said christians were "all wrong ... all their creeds were an admonition in his sight, and that those professors (Christians) were all corrupt" (Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith, 2:18-19). He did all he could to distance his followers from Christians.
Mormons preferred to be called "saints" rather than christian; the LDS church today is trying hard to present itself as Christian and is trying to overcome the stigma of being called a cult.
There are some fundamental differences to christian doctrine and Mormon belief that set them apart.
But hey! if you want to call them christians - you go for it, no skin off my nose, I'm neither.
