    Question Cooking oil on bike?

My bikes been unused for 3 months and after riding around the block following a good cleaning (in t-shirt and beanie - ooh noes!) it's looking like it's going back into the garage for another couple of months.

Was thinking of giving some of the metal bits (forks etc) a bit of an oil to see it through the long months. I'm a bit of a tightwad at the moment and don't want to have to buy anything specific, and like hell I'm putting CRC near my bike.

    So.....
Any opinions on using some of the pure olive oil spray I've got in the pantry?

    Ta.

Cant see it being a problem personally. Just make sure the bike is cold when you apply it, else it will burn on and be a real pig to get off. I have used cooking oil to free seized rusty things in the past. Back in the day used to use fish oil to prevent rust, that shit really stinks though

Haha thanks for the advice. I'm currently on fish oil daily but that stuffs too expensive to waste on the bike!

I assume it'd have the same affect the other end - if not removed properly it would burn on at next use?

    Yeah it certainly will.

I have a metal wok, no frills variety. Have had it for nigh on 25 years now. Periodically I give it the hell clean with steel wool and take it back to bare metal again. Then I seal it with baked on oil the oven at a high temperature, makes a coating that takes years to wear off, dont recommend that for your lovely. So yeah, oil it, store it and then clean it before you heat it up.

For a second there I thought you were talking about the effect the fish oil has on your arse

I have a slight (possibly irrational?) distrust of WD40 or CRC.... Not sure why...

And the hot water cylinder is in the ceiling dammit and I don't have a step ladder.

CRC is good shit for starting old bombs I used some to get my daughters car going once, far canal, it was the stuff that had ether in it. You should have heard the BOOM when it actually fired

Tackle Guard. It's a CRC product in a purple can and it's cheaper than olive oil too, so your theory is a false economy.
If it wasn't for a concise set of rules, we might have to resort to common sense!

Mineral oil doesn't rot. I wouldn't be spraying anything organic on the bike, especially an oil that turns into a caramelised, resin-like residue when left for any period of time.

Scottoiler FS365 is what the Brits use to stop their bikes rotting in Winter.

Muc Off also have a spray on product.

Silicon spray would do the job to, just keep it away from seals, tyres, and most of all, the seat.

All of these aerosol sprays are vastly cheaper than any organic oil by volume.

Yeah cheers jim. I was more thinking of the forks and a few nuts an bolts rather than the engine etc but after thinking about it a bit more I think i'd have to agree about the olive oil, especially with the smoke I've generated when cooking with it . Stupid idea really, but sore head and laziness does that.....

Not very mobile at the mo' and motomail don't seem to have any of the proper stuff on their website for mail order..... Bugger.

It may just need to sleep soundly under the bike cover and hope for the best.....

    It smells yummy too.

Also consider TurtleWax Ice. It's expensive, but it leaves a great finish.

Or do this for FREE lube.

Head down to family planning and tell them you and yours are having 'dryness' issues and you need a big tub of lube...........
