We use girls names - yes mainly pornstar names - but you only need the first name.

Nobody can object to working on 'Jessica'.....

but when you work on Jessica...... you can be thinking about working Jessica Alba (http://thetrawbros.files.wordpress.c...-bikini-07.jpg)

If you want a laugh, I remember one of the guys working on Cecil at Auckland Uni had his own server called Pikachu... I'm sure there are a lot of those names...

For our own sites, they are incredibly boring in comparison to you lot... company shortcode, machine suffix (srv for server, ws for workstation, lp for laptop, and so on) then a 3 digit number.

Hard part is when they change their name several times over

Elements - the hydrogen, helium, carbon etc. ones. You're not going to run out unless you're google and most people can spell most of them.

The Ministry for Education was full of Pokemon servers.

I've used animal diseases in the past. When someone I didn't like got a unix box I gave them really long names.

    Here's a starter for 10

    oh dear god ! ... LOL .

I enforce a naming standard that goes on company, business unit, location, function, number.

makes it easy to know what a system does just by looking at the name..

i still get pissed off when i find servers named after characters from Xmen .. LOL ... what the hell does that system do ???

You'll run out of names any any larg(ish) corporate.

A good rule of thumb is 4-5 users per server. Therefore plan in your naming scheme to support that many servers.

Personally, I prefer swear words or bodily functions.. causes much embarrassment and confusion... plus you get to invent some:

    fart
    shit
    burp
    convulse
    pee
    boopalate

    expressions like
"I need to drop fart" or "burp won't come up" make sense to everyone.

    etc.

An educational alternative - we used to use Greek Gods... sadly... and ironicvally because my previous suggestion of supermodels was seen through by management

The last few machines I've just pulled names out of my arse

    desktops:
    • womble (mine)
    • wibble
    • jeremy
    • yomama (that's reserved for 1 of the guys so he can say with a straight face that he's working on yomama)

    servers:
    • monster - can't use swear words so fuckenshitstainwankerpieceofarsehair wasn't allowed
    • chucky

    At home I've got
    • roflcopter
    • lolzskates
    • pants

    Haircuts could be interesting
    • mullet
    • shortbacknsides
    • flattop
    • brazilian

... and quite a few others

Countries of the world are good for 195 machines.

Spank should use Serial Killers names.

Body parts would be interesting. There's too many people and not enough embarassing names
    • vulva
    • sphincter
    • nuts
    • penis
    • nosehair
    • pubes
    • dangleberry

Sensible naming schemes based on function, location etc are the reason CNAME's exist!!

    Lot's to consider ...
