And was it fitted correctly with an even seal around the whole insert?

I have used them for over 7 years and not once has one ever fogged.
But maybe in the hard south island winter the conditions might be a bit more extreme.

Yes I should be able to make it work on an ffm visor.
The only visor these particular ones wont work on are Arai visors. But they have their own pinlock systems.
Nolan helmet, it doesn't have the little seal you speak of, although I do know a guy who seals his (Nolan) with "bluetack", reckons it works OK too!

I like the idea of the seal, it would stop rain or dust getting in between the surfaces when you have got the visor open!

I did have the helmet flip front and visor freeze up once, couldn't open it for ages to get the damn thing off!

It was really cold that day, heavy rain then ice and snow locked up the flip front, the visor fogged up big time.

We had to stop and thaw it out with warm hands off the hot grips!

I'm a little reluctant to use my pinlock insert (Arai Chaser helmet) since it is not perfectly clear (kinda yellowish) and therefore affects vision a little adversely. Any comments? Are they supposed to be like this or is mine a dud?

    Kinda yellowish?
There are inserts that come out in a yellow tint, but they are an obvious yellow. Maybe you do have a dud. Can you post a pic?

The inserts I use are for my Arais but apart from shape they are the same design as the shoei ones and work mint.

I havnt had any issues with mine. Once you get used to the seal around the outside of it they are fine.

Ah, well that makes sense. The Nolan inserts dont have a silocone seal around the outside so all sorts can get in between.
Im not too sure if these inserts would fit a nolan as their visor inserts are longer in shape than the shoei ones.

Sounds like you have ridden in some pretty extreme conditions...

Has anyone else had this problem when using this on their shoei helmets?
Yep, on my Shoei Syncrotech II. In the correct position, it is very close to my line of vision on the 640 - which has a pretty upright stance. Was in the way on my Triumph Trophy. And now that it doesn't really stay in place, it sags down across my vision.

The progrip one in my HJC helmet has a black seal, that one is also very close to getting in the way.

Both are a problem when they start to fog (usually from the bottom up) as you can't tilt your head to see over the fog - the top of the anti-fog insert obscures the clear part of the view.
    Cheers,
    Colin

    Here ya go...
Some pics. They show where the pinlocks would need to be fitted on this particular visor.
The sample visor is off a Shark RSI helmet (which have antifog visors so an insert is not needed).
Hope these make it a bit clearer.

No but they'll probably be pretty good. I used to wear yellow safety glasses when barefoot boat driving on crappy days. Really helped, as you had to keep an eye out for little sticks and things in the river

Would drilling the visor for the pinlocks invalidate the warranty / safety of the visor itself for impact protection?

Does anyone have experience comparing the Pinlock with Arai or Fogcity (I think drill-less) solutions?

+1 on the pinlocks. Bought them for my helmets and drilled the visor and fitted them. Besides no fog they also reduce the amount of cold on the face. It's like having double glazing. Great stuff.

I would never own a helmet without a pinlock.

It probably would affect the warranty on a visor, but to be honest I have never once had a warranty issue with a visor, and ive been hit by many different flying objects over the years. Im pretty sure that you will be fine if you drilled your visor. PLUS how do you think Shoei, Arai, Nolan etc get their pins in their pre made pinlock visors?
Is your helmet still covered under warranty?

I have used both the pinlock and stick on inserts. The stick on ones work fine, but I found they scratch really easy (easier than the pinlock type).
Personal preference in the end though.

If you dont want us to drill and fit pinlocks, there are visors to suit Arai's and Shoei's that already have pins fitted to them.

Yes I have used a yellow visor on my Arai. Works a treat in low light conditions. Not too good when on a hang over though as they are VERY yellow.
Ive used an Orange visor with a Shoei I had too, which works well too.

The pinlocks works better than anything I have ever used. It is a must use for these cold winter months.
