It's amazing how some bands rely totally on the sound engineering wizardry of the studio to mask a lack of talent.
It's too subjective really. Angus could play an Acoustic Ukelele and your average bogon will assure you it's the greatest lead break in AC/DC history, because they were caught up in the euphoria of the moment, crowd and vibe.

The only band I can say that consistently failed to live up to my studio expectations was Cold Chisel - but I only ever saw them when Barnsey was on the piss - and they were terrible.

Dragon apparently had a rep for some stinkers when Marc was on the gear, but I only ever saw them rock.

Saint Bruce of E-street, hallowed be his band, gave me the irrits slightly with over-reprises, but I was expecting perfection - and only almost got it.

    Tism.

I'd have never bought any of their albums if I could've seen them live every night.

Well I did enjoy AC/DC on their Razors edge tour way back in 91, (I think). Thought they were fantastic live. Although I enjoy their music Live or recorded. The stage show was pretty awesome. Especially the extras like, For Those About To Rock's 21 gun salute, Hells Bells, Money Talks made a great show. Definitely looking forward to February.

Iva Davies and Icehouse - dragged along by a mate who was a fan and it turned out to be one of the best gigs I ever saw...huge night and far better than any record would have you believe

Dance Exponents for free on a Tuesday night at the Espy in Melbourne - 10 people in the bar and only half were there to see the unknown band from NZ. What made it memorable was they worked just as hard to get the other five people interested as they did when I'd paid $20 to see them play to a packed out pub back home.

Matt Johnson and Johnny Marr aka The The were impossibly better then the heavily produced record they made...impossibly great live

Yea - all of these bands are great live.

For the show - and the way they accurately recreate the studio sound maybe.

On my OE I went to the Monsters of Rock at Donnigton in '82. I was there to see Saxon and Hawkwind maaan.

But headliners Status Quo played a storming set for over 2 hours and had the crowd eating out of their hands. A lot of their albums were pretty bland but that night I understood why they were so popular.

About that time I saw Queen on their Hot Space tour which was a God-awful album. They get a special mention because the concert was going south as they played their new funk inspired sound. The crowd just didn't like it. About midway through Staying Power they changed gears and powered up the PA and won over the crowd with their old rock style.

Sign of a great band, the ability to sense the crowd and change the mood to suit.

That's good when a band does that.

That's what i'm talking about.....Forget about their theatrics,or the wow factor of being there, seeing them.

A band you can close your eyes to,and they SOUND better then their studio recordings.

Oh yeah - another great live band but their songs are meant to be played live

And a special mention to George Thorogood and the Destroyers - nothing out of the ordinary musically compared to the albums but those good ole boys sure do put on a show!
