gotta say i agree with timber.........really dodgy use of chainsaw. And I too use saws for a living. I would use a table saw or even better a big dropsaw or radial arm saw. At least then the wood will stay still against the fence while it is being cut.
good luck... i am too far away to be any further help

I would be inclined to make up a cutting stand (like the ones that are used in the chainsaw manuals for cutting small lumps of wood)

The bits dont have enough weight to stay still while your cutting them either. I operate saws for a living and wouldnt risk doing it like that. saw cuts are like gunshot wounds, see a few of them and you gain new respect for them

You need to get a big table saw to do it or your really likely to have a life changing accident.

    Heres a light nip
Would the wearing the right gear have helped?

Been using a chainsaw as you described... and done so years mostly without bother... so a timely reminder never hurts. Ta!

One of these and you will be sweet

I am guessing you could also make a holder with a sprung to link to stop stuff flying up.

You asked for a solution for your problem, people offered you smarter and safer alternatives.

You probably know how to operate a chainsaw in the same way my nephew thinks he can ride a motorbike because years ago he rode a JR50, but hes hardly ready to borrow my fireblade.

So forgive us for trying to help you out, you dont even know enough to know you dont know enough, so someone has to look out for you, as your probably not qualified to do it yourself in all circumstances. Or do you lend out your bike to anyone that ridden a bike before?

You probably dont because you understand that unless a person has alot of experience at a certain level, then lending them your buell on the rimutakas would be irresposible and potentially dangerous. Same with us and our saws.
