Can a car be driven without a windscreen?

Can a car be driven without a windscreen for the purpose of getting to a place of repair?

I trawled through the LTNZ website and could only find a reference to windscreen wipers. As far as I can tell It's against the law/road code to drive without wipers but nothing about a complete lack of windscreen.

I drove one back from d'Auckland to Hamiltron years ago after a rock smashed the screen. The world didn't end...

I think "to a place of repair" covers a reasonable proportion of your arse...

Of course you can. Just be careful when using the windshield wipers and know it may get wet when raining...

Can't be legally definite, but I think if you got pulled over and were able to confirm you were actually on the correct route to the repairer and that they were expecting you, you'd be okay.

Hope it's not raining when you head off.

there is no reason why you can't...as long as there isn't glass dropping off everywhere your be fine..but word of advise whined down your back windows or you could be replacing the rear window too

and if you want too hide wear your crash helmet

Cheers, it's a pretty short trip to place of repair. In all fairness the equipment I have access too is not transportable - so it should not be a problem.

Well the place of repair is not actually to put in a new windscreen. I need to make repairs to an area that requires the windscreen not to be in the car. Once done, I will drive home again and install the windscreen.

Technically I believe it is illegal to drive without a windscreen, as it forms part of the structural integrity of your car. Therefore your car isn't roadworthy without it. But it would have to be a pretty mean copper to write you a ticket for that one!

Don't just wear your helmet, wear all your bike gear! Health & safety, doncha know!

Of course you can - you can always pick up one of those temporary plastic covers they use as windshields - probably from super cheap or the likes.

Some cars don't have a wind-screen, but they are still road legal.

    For example the Ariel Atom.

Years ago my (then) bro-in-law drove his car (Datsun 1600) several times on the road with no windows at all. He was getting it completely repainted, so took off all the fittings, and took out all the glass. He reckoned it seemed to go much faster with the wind whistling through the middle instead of round it. But then that was probably just how it seemed.
Either that or he'd been smoking weed beforehand...
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

I would say yes, I once drove from the Manawatu Gorge to Taupo without a windscreen, the desert road was fun, never seen rain like it, and the trucks going the other way? ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh duck!!! I had a towel wrapped around my head and tied on with a tie, sunny's on, sun visor down. Did any of that help? no I got drenched. Had a few bugs for company though.

Works for the v8 supercar drivers, granted they take out the rear windscreens too.. Open your windows up, should be a laugh in winter..
