Its questionable whether Hitler got anything done other than initiate the Holocaust and an expansionist and unrealistic view of foriegn policy.

In one way he is, of course, right. Things do get done when you have a totalitarian regime. The question is whether it's the right things that get done and if the fact that things get done is worth the price of diminished civil liberties.

A dictatorship would work just fine, if you could find the perfect person - benign, compassionate, intelligent, assertive, etc but completely devoid of desire for personal gain. Doesn't sound like any person I've ever met or heard off - but maybe if we ever develop proper AI...

In a lot of ways, terrible to say this I suppose, but apart from the fact that Vlad the Impaler got taken away and persuaded to do things that I have no idea whether he wanted to do or not, he was in the way that he could command a lot of people, able to get things done.

Yeah, it's a pity he decided to impale the entire aristocratic class of his country (20,000 of them, men, women & children) but I have no idea whether he wanted to do that or not. And he was able to command a lot of people.
