Raro? Great place. We'll go back. It's laid back, lots of casual eating options and it's warm without being oppressively hot ... well it was in August when we went. Just don't get sconed by a coconut falling from a tree. It does happen.(good thread dredge by the way!)

I have now visited six different Pacific Island nations.

    My choices in order are:

    1. Samoa. Particularly Savaii. Beautiful and very friendly people. Been there 4 times.

    2. Rarotonga, although next visit we will try one of the outer islands.

    3. Niue. There is not much to do for more than 3 days though.

    4. Tonga. Pleasant enough.

    5. Norfolk. 7 days is 2 days too many.

    6. Pago Pago. Dirty and americanised.

    Hmmm. Raro.

I had the vague impression that they were more interested in the $$$$$ than the people, unlike some of the other south pacific islands. Then some pissed local, who I was trying to save from being run over, king hit me from behind and legged it. Managed to get to a restaurant where they offered to ring a taxi, nothing else, not even a glass of water. Somewhat dazed at the time I got ripped off big time in the taxi. Got to the hotel and told to sleep it off although I was stone cold sober. Rang the police against the wishes of the hotel. Found that I was not worthy of actually switching on the x-ray machine so sent back with paracetamol. Eventually, a week later after the bones had started to knit, I arrived in the UK where the first person I saw recognised the fractured skull. In three places. Straight in to surgery where they had to break things again to put them straight - never realised a tyre lever could be used in that way Severed nerves mean snot runs down my nose on cold rides and I don't know about it until someone tells me.

Got a shag out of the quite impressive black eye on that island you can kayak to from the posh hotel but overall, nah. Fuck them. Will go back to Fiji next time. At least they have sand.

Spent a month there working 7 days a week - 11 to 12 hours a day.... Had one day off at the end of the project and it bloody rained! Sigh... Still - you are wet in the water anyway.... who cares if its raining.

Some nice bits - the waters warm - foods good..

Bad bits - stay the heck away from the nightclub / bars the locals use - they 'change' with a few steinies in them...
