    Ran out of fuel today

Bugger! I was heading into Wellington earlier this morning when I came around the bend at the bottom of the Gorge and the bike started spluttering. Dropped the hand down and switched the lever over to reserve.
Got through the interchange but the bike still didn't feel right. 200 meters later, I ran out of fuel.

2 Bikes stopped (didn't get the name of the first guy but if you're on here - thanks) Also to DODGER who also stopped to check I was OK. (Her indoors arrived a minute later with the can). Also had a chick in a cage who stopped and offered a sit in her car until my wife arrived .

I don't understand why the reserve never kicked in so will have to lift the tank tonight to see if there is a kink in the reserve pipe. - Not happy

Any chance the reserve tap was already on, and that you changed it back to the normal position?

Any chance that the angle the bike was on going down that hill may have had an impact on the fuel moving around in the tank? Or will it only use reserve when you are in reserve?

And I though the 9km reserve on my old XL600 was short

That was my first thought but when I looked, it has been moved to the 'reserve' position.

It's going to be either crap in the tank blocking the pipe or I've kinked the pipe whilst doing maintanance a couple of weeks ago.

I normally get around 225 miles (UK Bike) out of the main and a further 25-28 miles out of the reserve. The trip counter was sittiing on 202 when I left Tawa so was suprised that I didn't make Wellington.
But 200 meters on the reserve is a little short.

Or the fuel line to the tap has been connected the wrong way around ...

I vote on crap in the tank.

Nah! two pipes of different diameters. Can't make a mistake!

The bike has stood for 4-5 months and I've only just started using it again. It hasn't been turned onto reserve for probably 6 months. Crap in the tank seems the likely culpret.

Might not be solids, but water in the tank...
