    WHAT is this noise?

Have had a few people look at it and tell me it's everything from normal to valve clearances to cam chain... It comes and goes and is now doing it quite strongly under acceleration, meaning it feels like a 'ticking' on a couple of the valves in the handlebars.

    Thanks in advance

Get it checked out sooner rather than later.

It could be as simple as a stone lodged where it should not be OR i could be something more serious.

    Don't risk it.

    Good luck.

Something in the valve train is having a mental. I'd be getting that cover off pronto and finding out why. The chain sounds nice and smooth, but just one valve has got something bad about to happen.

If you are riding it and it gets suddenly louder, viz nickernickernickerTAPPerTAPPerKNACKerNACKerNACKer then clutch and kill-switch it PRONTO before it bites something off it shouldna. edit: you don't usually get that much warning though.

Just dropped her with Mike Newton at glenfield, so here's hoping it's cheap to fix!

If I find out a stone got into the head I'll wet myself.
Currently has a request for valve clearance check and oil change.

Oil should be full, coolant too... Last change maybe 3-4k ago?
    Will get it done anyway.

The noise semi goes away but range is down to ~190k from 250k on a full tank of gas when I got her, and makes a slightly discordant noise at speed. Oh and doesnt idle too smoothly after full warm up, one cylinder *just* fires.

My mate made his first engine eat itself after trying to ride it home after something in the engine went, learning from other peoples mistakes is much cheaper!

Funny you should say that, Chris at Queen st Motorcycles reckons it's a vvt because of the unusual head but I thought only the dimpled covers had that.

Getting shims done and cam chain adjusters looked at, hopefully with a tune thats about it. Apparently runs well for a 250 bandit, just shows how badly the others get treated I guess!

So, it's back. And it's not vvt (tear)
Just so if anyone in future has similar symptoms, heres what happened.

First of all cam chain adjuster was worn out.
Also, after 50,000k's + of reliable service what had happened is the valves had started to 'bed' into the head, meaning that the clearances were too tight and gases were escaping when they werent meant to. Chris has set all the clearences at the maximum allowed so that further bedding will keep the clearences in spec for a long time to come.

    Is success
