    1000cc engine facts

Picked mum up form the airport today, she's been in Germany, she must love me because she brought me some bike mags from over there.

One article went into the depths of a 2009 R1 engine and I found the facts pretty interesting.

    The 4 strokes
    Intake
At 12000/min the piston sucks in air faster than the speed of sound.

    Compression
Volume goes from 250cc to 20cc, the air reaches about 500 degrees C

    Combustion
Mixture ignites, reaches a peak of 3000 C, pressure of 90 bar, the piston surface is loaded with about 3.5 ton.

    Exhaust
Mixture leaves chamber, exhaust valves reach around 800 C

    Another part
What really goes on at 286kmh and 13500/min

    Specs
    R1 2009
    998cc, bore 78, stroke 52,2
    173hp crank, 159hp wheel
    111 Nm at crank

    Max revs at crank
    13500/min, 225/sec
    = 8930/min at clutch with 168Nm
    = 7036/min at sprocket in 6th at 12500/min with 213 Nm
    = 2522/min at wheel with 589 Nm
    = 23.5 m/s, 85km/h piston speed

    At 286km/h
    Speed of chain 110km/h
Actual circumference speed of rear wheel = 295km/h

Max temp at rear wheel = aprox 100C at surface

I thought someone on here may find it a little interesting.

Very interesting indeed, i think the R1 is one of the first production sports bike to use a cross plane crank, which makes for a lot better balance. Not sure whether it uses big bang or conventional timing though.
