Its 10pm at night and I'm on the North Shore of Auckland at the moment. It is very windy. For the first time in ages I decided to take the car rather than the bike.

i'll tell you where the storm was today

bulwer, that's where the fuking storm was, been down there for 3 days, yesterday was a cracker, tee shirts and shorts, got sunburnt.
today we got finished but had to abandon the digger on the side of the hill, no chance of getting it out today, the rain was phenominal, we filled a 7000l tank in about 2 hours from ONE downpipe off a garage roof, wind gusts at 130+. it blows so bad up there that the gravel gets blown off the road.

look it up, Bulwer. its the end of the road for the SI, it really is the back of beyond. FARK. going back tomorrow, hopefully the digger is still where we left it, and not at the bottom of the cliff.

How about the necessities, like a set of 41mm fork Gold Valve Emulators, a 500ml bottle of 15wt fork oil, and some grease for the steering head bearings?

I came back up from Welly yesterday around 4.30pm and that'd be one of the more exciting rides I've had. Shame the tide wasn't in, the waves on the road on the centenial coast road would have been spectacular, even if the salt would have been rather detrimental. That said, I'd been pushed all over the place by the wind and from Mana the rain drops were whoppers so I'd already had the mental...whats a little detri between friends!

Might have to get a little fly screen for the gisser though...a bit tired of wet bollocks (ok, tired of wet AND COLD bollocks).

Glenview - but in the gully, so pretty sheltered from the west...

That said, it did blow a little later in the day. 12mm of rain in the gauge this morning which is a lot less than we have had - like 30mm on 18 July and 46mm on 29 June. So pretty light here in fact.
Listening to RNZ this morning, it sounds like Wairarapa has really copped it...

Y'know I heard the TV weather whoever mention Bulwer the other night and thought they had just cocked up Buller because I had never heard of Bulwer!

I had meant to check up (just in case) and see if there was such a place and then forgot until I read your post!

I have sailed past it from both sides but have never been there, it's got a road to it, so now that is a must do trip on my bike, thank you for reminding me!

yep shes a ripper drive, theres one 10k section of road has something like 600 bends.

Theres a town(of sorts) there, all surveyed, streets ect, but all owned by one family.
one of those places that some colonial designed in england, not realising just how remote it actually was. I think Bulwer is where Nelson was origionally planned for, go figure

Let me know when you are heading there, maybe we could meet up.

the best time I have done is 2hr40 from Blenheim, in my ute in the rain(never been there when its been dry)
French pass is another good one.
