    Blah Hear me roar!

I am a woman who rides bikes. I am also a Mother of 3 lovely children. I am married, my husband is the most wonderful man I have ever met. I also have 2 fantastic step daughters that without my lovely man I never would have had the pleasure to get to know and love.

I am a bit oldfashioned about somethings, and very modern about others. I hesitate to call myself feminist, and even though I did actually burn bras back in the day, I have never been able to identify myself with feminism. I shave my legs for starters

However, there is something that seriously grates on me, and I see it on here so many times. Since when, just because I am married should I be referred to as THE wife?

Come on, seriously, think about this a bit.

We refer to the table or the chair. We might say the bus or the ticket or heaven help us the car. I doubt I have ever read on here anyone refer to their bike as THE bike. It is always my bike, my pride and joy, my new toy or what have you.

    Food for thought eh.

Ok sorry about that we'll use "The handbrake" from now on

Hey I dont mind owning my own stuff lovely..

My issue is with the derogatory label "THE" when used to refer to your lovey life partner.

    Thumbs up Status

I guess one would rather be elevated to a position of importance than be lumped in the same phraseology as an item or object of ownership?

    I own my bike
    I own my car
    My job owns me

    But she is THE wife

Too me it is said in a manner that elevates her above a chattle to independant person who just happens to have become my wife - but to refer to her as my wife would infer ownership of some kind, wouldn't it?

Don't think I will win either way - I'm just THE other half, I'm bound to get it wrong no matter what phrase I use

    Interesting topic!

I'm not married to my partner, so he can't hall me either 'his' wife or 'the' wife.
He thinks 'partner' sounds too businesslike.
We're both too old for him to call me his 'girlfriend'.

So as a result, he has to call me by my name!
