Radar detectors. Which one?

Searching the threads hereabout will give an idea as to which makes are popular, but the model information will likely be out of date. But so probably would be a second hand detector.

Then again I'd consider selling mine because there's a new undetectable Escort out with longer range detection and a metal case... Probably expensive, but not as expensive as having a cheap detector that doesn't do its job.

If on a tight budget it's probably better to stay under the speed limit?

Yeah, thats a good point, however there are some extremely good resources out there for finding out how well these units perform. My favourites are:

I bought a Cobra 9945 from paralell imported for $400.

It works well, on two occasions recently it gave me a 20s+ warning on HP patrols on SH16 (one moving and one stationary).

I might add, a radar detector will never work as well as a sharp pair of eyes though!!

A Beltronics XR works a lot better than a sharp pair of eyes it has saved me many times where the police are nowhere to be seen...over crests off hills, around corners and it NEVER falses...if it goes off beware, there are blue and reds somewhere.

A tinfoil hat takes care of that...

I find that certain areas "do" have a higher paranoia rating than others. With a good detector it only activates when there is a definate presence.

Actually when ever we hit highways we stick the detector up,get sick of it in town,even on lowest setting.

Really surprising the false alarms on ka band,especially if a tractor is on the road,gps in them maybe,usually slow down,but then that's what they're made for.

And the amount of time you go passed a police car and the detector is quiet,can happen a couple of times in 250km area we travel.

Nope....have mine with all the whistles for bikes (see previous post of mine in this thread) for $1000 ono. It NEVER falses and I have it always on 'highway' mode even in town...if it goes off there is a radar in opperation somewhere!

Ive got a cheap shitty radar detector from overseas that I only use when Im wanting to give the turbo a good working out. Ive been told it upsets their signal also, so once Ive hit the picks, I turn the detector off also.

Exactly right, otherwise you run the risk of selling off the bike/girlfriend/mistress/whatever to pay the fines.

Yes, but it's OK, as long as you slow down before you start looking...

I use an Escort Solo 2.

It has internal batteries and an earpiece.

Which makes it ideal for use on a bike...

My Escort 8500 doesn't false alarm on Ka ever. It has gone off a few times when I've never spotted the cop, but generally only low signal strength and around Balmoral Rd, where I pick up heaps of cops legitimately anyway...

I used to use a detector on my CB1300. It was an STI, and apparently one of the better ones. But yeah .... even if I was going between 100 - 110kmh, I was always wondering when it was going to go off. Even though I was confident that I had good technology on my side .... I never "relaxed" really, and enjoyed my ride, ... as I was often getting along quite a bit quicker than the 100 - 110, and always wondering when I was going to have to grab the picks ... and button off, to avoid a ticket .... or walking.

My CB was quite capable of much more than double the speed limit, and it was awful tempting to use that grunt ...

However ..... a few bikes later down the track, and the STI sold off when the CB went, .... and I won't ever buy a detector again.

I'm REALLY enjoying my cruiser. I don't feel the need to fly down the road anymore, and enjoy my riding much more because I only have to worry about the idiots on the road around me ...... not worrying about getting a ticket for speeding. It's bloody good !!!!!! I still get a real buzz out of riding, and enjoy the journey more than I used to, because now I can SEE what I'm passing through, rather than it being a blur .... !! lol. Also I get to where I want to go feeling really relaxed and just enjoy the ride !!

Speed is a buzz, no question about it !!! But as someone else has said .... thats what track days are for .... and there isn't the crap roads, and solid things to run in too either ....

Just another thought or perspective on the need for a detector ....
