Was talking about this today at work. I am happy he has been convicted of some of the charges he faced.

I imagine there will be a few people out in society at the moment having a few second thoughts around how they conduct themselves in light of the outcome of this case.

This is how we do it it our culture is not much of a defense it seems if you truely are dishonest.

    How embarrasing.

It's not just that. He was also an MP. MP's have to be held to a higher standed than your average person.

You can't have someone making the rules and at the same time breaking them.

That's exactly right; the office (and the person in it) should be squeaky clean or respect goes out the window. Like cops who lie; it's worse than a member of the public telling porkies because they are percieved to be above such skullduggery.

With that in mind I feel that members of office or sworn police should face harsher penalties for fraudulent acts. Given time, respect for the policy makers, law makers and the upholders of the law might return.

    Or is it too late?

True, his attitude was "I am a Taito and beyond being questioned". He seemed totally arrogant!

The case really turned into a circus when those maori protest idiots got involved.

Don't forget how Clark and Cullen defended him and the current Liarbour mob are still doing so...there's more to come on immigration-related corruption within that party, of that you can be sure.

It is certainly a first for labour. Leading the way, by having their first (also, NZ's first) conviction of a corrupt MP.

Stand and be proud labour. The Guiness Book will soon be calling to register your result.

Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

The other kicker is that although he was found guilty on 20 something counts, each with a maximum term of 7 years - NZ typically uses concurrent sentencing.

So rather than facing a maximum sentence of 20x7 years, it will only be a maximum sentence of 7 years (since all sentences get served at the same time).

I don't know the facts of the case that were presented in court (which is probably not the same as presented by the media), but I would expect the court to hand down a maximum sentence since he was a sitting MP at the time, and because of the number of guilty verdicts.

I'm a little surprised at the things he did, but I was also a little surprised at how sincere he was throughout the process.

So they painted his fence?
