It seems reasonable it is a contributing factor. Any sudden increase in costs in something that is widely used is going to have a ripple.

Well, the longer we keep our collective heads in the sand and refuse to face up to the reality, that we are currently relying very heavily on a finite resource, the harder we will crash once reality catches up with us.

Alas, the oil industry - obviously - has a huge influence on many aspects of strategic planning worldwide... and they have not, so far, been too fond of helping fund research into alternative energy sources.

That's true, but some of the predictions about electric vehicles assume an awful lot too. And, hydrogen is no help - it's not an energy source, but a means of energy transportation, in much the same way that electricity is.

I think weve been oblivious since 1978....
What I cant understand why have consecutive govts since then have done stuff all. Why is it we cant raise our own money for investment in alternative fuels & or oil exploration? Nah, that'd be to simple....lets invest our super funds in dodgey schemes overseas ,that are prone to abuse by the Global finance circus

Oh, while we,re at it, lets lease out all the offshore mineral rights to the likes of RioTinto & the Chinese for the princely sum of about $5 per square km per annum, with no royalties I understand that the mineral rights for the West Coast from Raglan to the bottom of the Sth Isl out to our 200 mile limit have been sold for about 3million per annum (correct me if Im wrong)
Wouldve thought that'd be a good investment for NZ considering the ammounts of Gold etc that they belive is there....

It's a conspiracy.

Oil prices are driven not by shortages but by international cartels. Cartels operate in many fields (pardon the pun) and we are powerless to stop them, plain and simple.

Our only hope is to drink piss, smoke pot, take as many recreational drugs as we can afford (or as much as our bodies can tolerate) have sex, and get out on our bikes as often as possible so as to forget these oppressive powers.

Or we could go to church.
